Meet James Pratt | Actor : Director : Auctioneer

We had the good fortune of connecting with James Pratt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has been instrumental for me, both from a personal growth standpoint, but also embracing that there is a certain level of excitement in living your life when you get out of your comfort zone and take risks to achieve big goals.
I’ve found if you want to achieve substantial rewards in life, there are always going to be risks involved, but that’s a much better way to live your life than if you play it safe and then later on regret not trying.
One of the inspiring aspects of Los Angeles is that you meet a lot of people who have moved here from other states and countries and taken risks to pursue their dreams. To me, that’s inspiring because they are living out their best life, and the rewards will be far greater.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over the years I have found the greatest investment you can make is investing and encouraging other people as I have been very lucky in my own careers. I grew up in Sydney, Australia, mainly interested in surfing competitions and sports during my early years until after high school when I found myself in a remote country town with nothing much around except wheat fields. While there, I made a $200 short film called ‘New York Model Agent,’ which was selected for the NBC Universal Shorts Film Festival in California.
This propelled my journey as NBC expressed interest in acquiring a feature version of the short. From that point on, my acting and auctioneering career started to take off. I refined my acting skills by studying at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and have since been incredibly fortunate to work alongside several Academy Award winners and have been fortunate enough to receive some prestigious awards along the way, such as Best Actor at the Beyond Hollywood Int’l Film Festival and Australia’s Top 5 under 35.
Outside of filmmaking, real estate auctions have been another passion for me. I have been very fortunate to be a former 4-time REB Australian Auctioneer of the Year winner and auctioned over 12,000 homes around the world. In April 2019, I was the auctioneer for the world’s first cryptocurrency auctioneer auction.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I fell in love with Los Angeles when I first moved here; there is such a unique blend of activity and cultures. I also loved the sun; it isn’t as intense as back in Australia, so you can surf longer.
My recommendation for someone visiting would be surfing or swimming early in the morning at Malibu Surfrider Beach or Little Dume; there is great surf in Malibu. For dinner, some of my suggestions would be Catch, Craig’s, or the Terrace at the Maybourne in Beverly Hills, which is great for quiet conversation. If you want to see the city, Spire73 is pretty cool; it’s a rooftop bar 73 floors up.
I would also recommend, at sunset, trying at least once hiking Runyon Canyon; the views of the city below as the lights come on at night are very inspiring.”

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to say thank you to Jessica Ross and Tanya Stawski, my two oldest friends in Los Angeles and two people that, even before I moved over full-time, have been a constant support to me here.
