Meet James Wong | Owner and Neighbor

We had the good fortune of connecting with James Wong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always had a passion for remodeling. I’ve own four homes in my lifetime, and I’ve remodeled every single one of them. I always felt like closets were overlooked and the spaces were never fully utilized to their full potential. Also, it really bothered me with the lack of details some of the contractors would leave out, so I knew I would do a much better job than other companies with my custom closet business. We also jumped at the opportunity to buy the San Gabriel Valley franchise as my family and I have been in the area for over 30 years. We absolutely love the SGV area and would not live anywhere else.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Tailored Closet of Arcadia is a family run franchise. The customer gets the best of everything with us. We are licensed with the Contractors State License Board, we are insured, we are bonded, and you get the quality control of using a franchise. The client gets the peace of mind knowing we will be here in the future and not some fly by night company. Being the owner, I am there every step of the way, from initial consultation to the final walk through. You’re dealing with a family member during each process too. My wife, Tiffany, is the designer. My son, Andrew, leads a very detailed and skilled installation team. Customers are treated more as friends and can get responses from us instantly, so they don’t have to worry about calling a generic number and speaking to an operator. The one thing that we do, and no other company really does is we blue tape your walls before a deposit is even received. This means when a price and a design are agreed upon, my son, Andrew, and my wife, Tiffany, will go to your space again and tape up where the closet/office starts and ends. This way the client can see the heights, widths, and depths of each section. Clients love this as it makes it so much easier for them to visualize what the finished project will look like.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to Grand Central Market and eat at The Donut Man. This would be followed with a quick ride on Angel Flight and the Bradbury building. For outdoor activities, my favorite place to hike is Point Dume in Malibu, so that is a must. A Dodger game is also a must if the season is right. For food, I would take them to Din Tai Fung for dumplings, Capital Seafood for dim sum, and Tacos Ensenada for mexican food. There are also LA classics such as Philippes for their famous french dip sandwiches.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a lot of credit to my wife, Tiffany, for our success. We have been self employed in one way or another for about 30 years and she has been my pillar through those years. She is willing to do anything to help our company, whether it’s spending hours on a closet design or sweeping up the floors at the end of a busy day. She is amazing. Being the lead designer of The Tailored Closet of Arcadia is the perfect job for her. She does not look at her job as work as she truly loves designing and has a true passion for it.
