Meet JAMS The Flava Child | Rapper

We had the good fortune of connecting with JAMS The Flava Child and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JAMS, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance is everything. I journal, mediate, workout and stay outside because that’s what makes my soul feel good, but its the best way to balance the stress of this music industry. I strive to achieve life balance everyday. I used to be super goal oriented, that makes it tough to balance your life – living with the highs and the lows. So these days I depend on building a system to reach my goals. Live more simple. Want less and be more present. But I think in order to be great you sacrifice balance a lil bit. It comes with the territory..
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve never met an artist with a story like me. I’m as independent as it gets. 110% self made. I moved to Chicago when I was 18, but before that I was in a county where nobody did music or anything creative. I had to take initiative and put myself in a new pair of shoes to gain my perspective and knowledge. I’m most proud of my resilience and ability to keep smiling. Those probably go hand and hand huh… Its never been “easy”, but for me, this is the only route. I couldn’t imagine not making music or not dedicating my time to what I love. So even on the worst days, its easy to remember – I do what I love and this is the life I chose.
I overcame challenges living by the motto “Adapt & Overcome”. Life as an artist is changing all the time. The target changes, the people change, but the goals stay the same. You either have 2 choices – keep going or give up. And I’ve always felt like giving up is wayyyy harder than it is to keep going. So I choose to adapt my work flow, my ambitions, the people around me, in order to overcome my situation.
I want people to know that you can do it! I had all the odds stacked against me but it didn’t matter – I just never gave up! Thats my greatness. I focused on what I can control – self improvement and honing my craft. Leave the rest in gods hands.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay, okay I’m from Chicago and a visitor myself but this is my type of question, let’s do a Sunday in LA with JAMS. We’ll start the day early and head to The Strand – Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo – hit a little walk, run, maybe a bike ride something slight. Take some time to enjoy the Ocean, meditate and get the thoughts right. Now its breakfast time – if we’re going local I’m hitting Brothers Burritos in Manhattan beach, best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had. They give you 2 small ones instead of 1 big one – I think all burritos should be like that! But if we’re going bigger, we’ll cruise the Cadillac to Culver City for some Honey Kettle Chicken. Mmm mmm mmm, blueberry pancakes and fried chicken here – best I’ve ever had. After that stop at Pico & Redondo on the way home. Which always felt like the middle of the action for me, getting out of West LA and in to East LA. I’ll stop in DD’z Treats, get some frozen grapes and some blunts, see if any of the homies are outside enjoying the weather. After that, its music time! Pull up on the homies, maybe Polyester The Saint, Swshr, or TJ Murphy and cook up some music. Thats SundayFunday with JAMS.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom, she’s my best friend. The one & only person that never turned their back on me, believed in me unapologetically, my #1 fan. She’s got that midwest grit and resilience to her. Its also one of my biggest motivators. Momma gave me everything she could (and I was a pain in the ass), so its only right I give her the world.
