We had the good fortune of connecting with Jane Free and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jane, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Having the healing arts as my main business practice allows my internal life to stay aligned with my external life. Studying the performing arts for the first half of my life, it was not a surprise that bodywork + the healing arts found me on a professional level when I was 23. I was not planning to become a bodyworker, but family members, friends and colleagues started coming out of the wood work for some “deep breathing relaxation therapy.” I was an avid yogi at the time and my sessions integrated pranayama and floor massage. Relaxing in itself is an art form. To answer the question prompt “why did you pursue an artistic or creative career ?” – the arts chose me. I could not deny the creative juices: bodywork, writing, singing, chanting, music making all flow through. I choose to walk with the awareness that we create our own realities. I choose to create meaningful expressions that help unveil self-realization, self inquiry and self acceptance. I persure the arts to find more of myself and illuminate the human condition.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After practicing the healing arts for 17 years I was finding a plateau in my expression. I was starting to feel dull and resistant to the “self-care” language and practices I had been teaching, it was time to find a new expression that would light me up. 2008 -2011 I spent three years playing in a 6 piece band with my brother called Free Lions, we played over 30 shows and opened at the Roxy. We released two EP’s before the group dissolved. I was also a new mom at the time which shifted my entire focus. I was not sure I would ever play or perform again, as a single mother at the age of 25 – it was pretty much a total loss. Over the next decade I was vigilant in my healing and emotional freedom practices- in January of 2020 I unveiled this new version of myself : Jane Free on our KLBP public radio show: Morning Intentions Radio ( monday – friday 7-8 am ) While I was building the Healing Arts College, Panacea Holistic institute… I needed a false student name to make example transcripts with…. well instead of John Doe – we found Jane Free ! The first graduate of Panacea Holistic Institute. Jane Free started raising funds for suicide awareness in February 2020. I am very happy we had 2 live shows before the pandemic hit. As of now, we are just getting started with film production – we are 1/4 of the way through our Music Film shoot that accompanies the Jane Free + the Earthlings 27 minute song cycle. Jane Free Productions and Jane Free Music are naturally occurring creative projects of Sacred Roots Holistic Healing Center, officially filed as of the summer 2020. We have footage for a public sound bath documentary “sound in the streets” that is in the que behind the seven part Music Film : Jane Free + the Earthlings. It is not easy, it is unimaginable, people laugh when I tell them my ideas, I let them know I am just getting started. I look forward to sharing my healing arts teachings through as many mediums as they choose to arrive, be it music, movie, meditation, bodywork session. Jane Free is not effing around. Jane Free is a brand committed to personal liberation. Jane Free stands for equality on all fronts. Jane Free is not me – I’ve found it to be a movement in the culture. Everyone has a piece of Jane Free residing within, waiting to be called out to this celebration – we call life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Considering the pandemic – I recommend getting out to nature first. If you are comfortable being in a medical grade indoor environment Sacred Roots Holistic Healing is holding limited seating, evening retreats on Fridays that include a Sound Meditation journey, optional vegan meal from Under the Sun or foot massage from Panacea Holistic Alumni. If you would like some classic german food – I recommend Rassellbach in bixby (to go). Thai food I recommend Ma Now in the Belmont Heights neighborhood. If you would like some tiki vacation vibes check out Bamboo Club togo orders. ALWAYS >>>> yoga on the buff everyday on junipero + ocean at 11 am . Bing a mask, bring a blanket. open your heart! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been waiting to produce this debut album until the stars aligned >> with vigor!!!! << Over the last year I would not have been able to produce and complete my debut album without Dream Machine LB recording studio, specifically Derek Poulsen. Derek found me at my holistic center: Sacred Roots Holistic Healing. He was playing music at a few of our holistic gallery openings. Then and there a seed was planted to start cultivating my sound bath rock n’ roll album. Angela Jane Bachmann, Anthony Colocho and Chuck Wackerman sat and mentored me in the creative song writing process through winter and early spring 2020. Sopurkh of rainbow juices + under the sun vegan restaurant, Ram Bhakt of Long Beach school of Yoga, my husband and daughter Jason + Opal Miller showed up for improvisation recording in late May 2020. It was a family affair. Truly a culmination of the last decade’s internal emotional work, grief and self-realization. A personal musical memoir. Jane Free + the Earthlings.
