We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Pietrzak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Stick-with-it-ness, grit, persistence. Over the years, I have seen so many talented photographers give up when they were so close to success. It’s really sad that all that creative energy has been lost to the extreme competitiveness of the artistic lifestyle. Not to say that there shouldn’t be a level of competition with each other and with ourselves, as that is what drives us to improve and succeed, but I wish there was more acknowledgment of how difficult it is to be an artist. Not only do we constantly second guessing our own abilities but we are also endlessly being rejected by our peers and the outside world. Every artist is a pioneer, they are always forging new paths and that is a really difficult way to live, it takes constant work and energy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a photographer with a focus on fashion, but I have other projects that are non-fashion as well. Personally, the greatest success of my career has just been getting to work with other creatives on an ever escalating level of creativity. Success in the arts is a tricky topic. With other kinds of businesses, success is generally monetized, but in the arts, you often find very successful artists who still have to work second jobs to pay the bills. It’s often a labor of love and I wish we better supported artists, especially now that so many creatives have lost their jobs due to Covid.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I told you I would have to kill you, never give up your secret spots!!!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Lately, I have really been enjoying all of the creative people involved in the TGS Collective. This is a great group of creative artists, who support diversity, inclusion and unity in the arts, with a special focus on fashion. Our photography meet ups are life.
