We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Safford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janelle, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I began writing songs when I was very little. Seeing how other musicians made me feel less alone in what I was going through inspired me to create music as well. I have always loved music because of the way that it can create words for unexplainable feelings. I remember when I was a little girl, I would walk over to my family friend’s house with my CD and CD player in hand and I would perform a new song that I had practiced the singing and choreography for. Singing and writing music has always been a huge part of my life and being able to share what I love doing with others is very exciting to me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I just released my debut single “Frozen Ice”. This song is about when someone hurts you so bad that you cannot feel anything anymore. This release was not only a big deal for me because it was my first single, but it was also huge because I wrote and produced the song entirely by myself. I currently attend California Institute of the Arts which is one of the top music schools in the country. I am working towards receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music. Being able to learn about music production techniques and creative ways to make music has made me realize the unlimited types of music I can create, which I am very grateful for.
Writing songs and producing music are skills that have required a lot of patience and hard work for me to become good at. Being able to release an original song did not come overnight. It took years and hours of daily practice in my room until I could not play my instrument anymore because my hands hurt too much. But, even though the process of making music has been difficult, what I have accomplished from the hard work has been worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is the perfect place for musicians and music lovers! From iconic venues such as the Troubadour and The Roxy Theatre where musicians such as Bob Dylan and Elton John have performed, these venues are a perfect place to watch a show and become part of music history. Not only can you enjoy concerts at historical locations, but you can also go to record labels where some of the best music has been created. Capital Records is just one of the top music labels based in Los Angeles where artists still record music there today. And if you’re lucky, you just might spot one of your favorite artists leaving their recording session!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Taylor Swift inspired me to begin making music and because of her, I developed an interest in performing as well. Seeing how she was able to bring so many people in the world together just through her music is something that I strive to do with my art as well. The diverse amount of genres that Taylor Swift has experimented with throughout her career has opened me up to the limitless styles of music that I can experiment with.

Also, noticing how Taylor Swift is professional in everything that she does even if it is a Tik Tok that she posts has made me realize that music is not only a hobby, but it is a business as well.
