We had the good fortune of connecting with Janet Igah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janet, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My motto is “Take Flight! It is better to have gone and failed, than to not have gone at all.”

Risks are scary, but necessary, for success. I have taken many risks, some calculated, others, not so much, but you’ll never know which is the one that will take flight.

I’ve also learned a lot about myself in every process. The doing and the undoing.

What should our readers know about your business?
DOE Media & Publishing is a communications firm based in New York City. Our core strengths are visual storytelling and deep industry connections.

I am excited to present brands with the opportunity to gain more visibility through cross-branding and thoughtful earned media placements.

I got to where I am today by believing in God and the abilities he has given me. I also value forming strong connections. No man is an island so we really value the people I work with on all sides. It sure was not easy! It’s also not rocket science, being kind, and doing my best are key elements to my success.

Challenges are some of my best teachers. Again, I’ve learned so much by failing, making mistakes and not showing up as my best self. Those mistakes taught me what circumstances help to create the best environments for me to thrive and I use that as a basis to accept or deny work; much like an inner compass.

I’ve had to build a sort of mental toughness in order to survive hard blows. I’ve had many losses, connections, friendships, investments, but one thing I try to keep as a constant when everything is low, are my whys. I am in it for legacy, for the art of passion and because I truly love what I do, even when not every moment of it or every person I work with is enjoyable; I still get up and make it happen.

You gon’ get this work!

And it’s going to speak for itself in rooms I’m not even in yet. That has ALWAYS and will continue to ALWAYS be my testimony!

I knew nothing about business when I started. If I can do it, a little shy girl from Queens, then anyone really can!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I am a Native New Yorker,

We’d start the week off by hitting some of my favorite food spots, Café Habana in Soho, or Peaches in Bedstuy.

We’d then have to catch whatever galleries are in town. Currently Basquiat, First Fridays at the MoMa, and Reflecting Beauty by J. Monroe, who is a friend of mine, at Basquiat’s Bottle in Brooklyn.

Generally I like to pop in and out of downtown Brooklyn and Soho between designer showrooms and lunch dates with friends. A place I frequent is Dreu Beckemberg’s Alteration Shop on the Flatbush Extension. Get a little fit fitted and pop out for the evening to a networking social or event I’m hosting. Catch dinner at Hunt & Fish in Midtown.

Likely, we’d catch a movie at the Alamo, or something indie up in Soho before the weekend so it’s not crowded.

We’d probably end the week thrifting at Housing Works or Crossroads and stopping by church in Williamsburg at C3NYC before catching brunch at Sunday in Brooklyn.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my family. They are instrumental in keeping me grounded, focused, and supported.

Dayo & Dawn Olatokun, an amazing couple running non-profits in NYC

James R. Sanders, Stylist & Editor in New York

Dreu Beckemberg, Brooklyn-based menswear designer
