We had the good fortune of connecting with Jared Thurston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jared, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a parent, my biggest impact I believe to have had on my daughter is cultivating an environment of complete acceptance for individuality. Me being an artist and making expression and knowledge of self a big priority is something that I emphasize heavily with her. I love the idea of her embracing what I took years to learn at such an early stage in her life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a culmination of life lessons, affirmations for self and listeners, and safe spaces for feelings and experiences that are often hidden or shunned by society, with intricate literary device serving as a vehicle to deliver everything. I avoid the cliche tropes of the genre and instead aim to make thought provoking references that are unique to my own personality and values.

It took a lot of work to get to this point in my career, and not just the external work but a lot of internal growth and learning about who I was and who I wanted to be in this world, and finding the courage to double down on that. In addition, there was so much work put into the technical aspects of the craft, working nonstop and recording like crazy. Going through the pitfalls of the usual dead ends of exploitation by sinister people in the industry, or learning the difference between what looks effective versus what actually is effective. Through it all I’ve learned that the key is in being yourself and finding your own way, you can’t expect to mirror other paths used by other people and experience the peak of your own potential as an individual artist, you have to figure out what your brand is and how you want to communicate that to the people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the Bay Area there are so many places to visit that are just amazing. I would definitely get my zen on at Alamere Falls in Balinas, it’s A hell of a hike but wow the beauty of it all is just an experience. I would visit Aptos or Santa Cruz to really take in the relaxed vibe of the coast. Me, I absolutely love pizza so I’d have to recommend some Patxi’s or Zachary’s for the most amazing deep dish slices. For dessert you can’t go wrong with a custom ice cream sandwich from Cream.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been blessed to have some very influential and supportive people in my life that have helped me to this point. My friend circle, every romantic love that I’ve shared, my little girl, all these people have been so key to who I am. My mother has to be the biggest influence of all. She literally taught me to be myself through affirmation and encouragement my whole life, it made me so brave in my individuality in ways that I wouldn’t have been otherwise.
