We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Husain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The best things in life sometimes do come unexpectedly. Baking has always been a passion of mine ever since I can remember. Any time I would get away from school, I spent in the kitchen making cakes for my family just for fun. It became my creative outlet and was the one thing I looked forward to doing every weekend. Fast forward to January of 2021, I revisited my hobby during the pandemic because I had some extra time on my hands during lockdown. Shortly after, several friends reached out regarding orders for Valentine’s day which happened to be just two weeks later. I had not imagined that my hobby would turn into something so much bigger but I am grateful that I took the chance and followed my passion.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a self-taught baker, I came into the cake business with a burning passion and minimal knowledge of how or where to start. All I knew was that I wanted to bring my clients’ visions to life in the form of a cake and was up for the challenge. Sleepless nights, failed cakes, missed ingredients, countless trips to Costco, and a messy kitchen basically sums up what my life has looked like for the past year and a half, but I would not trade it for anything else. The best part is that every cake I make, I learn something new and apply that knowledge onto the next one. Although making custom themed cakes is probably one of the most nerve wrecking and tedious tasks there is out there, the look of excitement on my clients’ faces when they see the end result makes all the hard work and effort so worth it. As someone who is extremely picky myself, I understand how difficult it can be to find a business that will work with your vision and bring it to life in just the way you want. My ultimate goal is to give my clients the best looking and tasting cakes they have ever had.The journey so far definitely has not been easy, but a very memorable one for sure. Moving forward, my goal with Sweetside LA is to focus more on making wedding cakes, but of course will always be up for themed cake requests!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is definitely a lot to do when out in Los Angeles! Some great places to go visit for a fun day would be Laguna Beach, Fashion Island, Santa Monica Pier, The Grove, The Americana at Brand, Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, a drive down to San Diego, and Disneyland. There are countless shopping plazas all around LA which you can never go wrong with. Some of my personal favorite places to go eat include Korean BBQ, Utopia Euro Caffe, Smoke and Fire, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Nomad Asian Bistro and most importantly, Surati Farsan on Pioneer Blvd for some delicious Pani Puri. LA is also filled with some great hiking trails which are always fun, such as Bridge to Nowhere, Runyon Canyon, The Hollywood Sign, and Eaton Canyon.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has always been my number one support system throughout everything. Most importantly, I would like to thank my mom, Naghma, for showing me what it takes to win in life. Despite all the adversities she has gone through, she has shown me that it is possible to turn my dreams into reality if I make the decision to. She came to the US at the age of 17 not being able to speak one word of English. Today she runs a multiple six figure Wedding Decoration business named Bombay Decor. Love you mom! I also want to thank my dad and brothers for test tasting all my cakes and encouraging me to keep pursuing my passion even when the cakes didn’t taste or look as good. Last but not least, I would like to thank all my Sweetside LA supporters and clients for trusting me with your orders. Thank you for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to fulfill my passion every single day. I cannot be more grateful and am extremely excited to see what the future holds!
