We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Thomas Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason Thomas, how does your business help the community?
Last year I released a book called The Singers Talk. The book was inspired by the fact that I had been a drummer my whole life, and had recently become the lead singer for my band Kingsize. It’s a beautiful job, but it’s brutal. And what I found was that singers never get asked about their voice, how they survive on the road, funny stories about messing up onstage, etc. So I decided to write this book. All my royalties from sales of the book would then benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which was founded by my grandfather, Danny Thomas, in 1962.

When my grandfather passed away, I started a program called Music Gives to St. Jude Kids, which raises money and awareness for the hospital through music based initiatives. St. Jude is incredible because we lead the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer. And no family ever receives a bill for their treatment, travel, housing or food.

Well, The Singers Talk has now become a podcast. The podcast is the actual audio from when I was interviewing this iconic singers for the book. The show also features some ways to donate to St. Jude as well. And you get to hear some amazing conversations between myself and people like Roger Daltrey, Thom Yorke, Norah Jones, Michael Stipe, Bryan Adams, LeAnn Rimes, Simon Le Bon, Sammy Hagar… the list goes on. Check it out anywhere you stream podcasts!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m excited about our new album. We’ve just started releasing singles from the record, and I’m proud of us. We haven’t given up on ourselves and still hold close to why we started this band to begin with. We wanted to make the kind of music that just doesn’t seem to exist that much in the mainstream anymore. Rock music isn’t as popular as it used to be. But we do it anyway, because that’s who we are, and that’s what we love. I also don’t see a lot of artists writing about the world we’re living in today, and we wanted this new record to be a reaction to that. I wouldn’t say it’s a typical protest album. You can still sing along to it, rock out to it, even dance to it. But the message is there. And when we look back upon this time, especially in the US, we’ll be able to say, here’s what we said about it. We didn’t hide, or stand on the sidelines. Kingsize went on the record. Literally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, we’d have to drive up the coast, listening to some soft 70’s yacht rock. Get to the beach. I’ve been vegan for 33 years, so we’d hit up all the best spots in town. (Too many to name, but Crossroads, Pura Vita, Ma Kin Sushi, Kusaki, Extra Market, and Hot Tongue, for a start). We’d have to go to any great concert rollin’ through town. Same with some stand up comedy shows. We need the Dome and the Archlight back up and running, but any solid movie goin’ experience. The New Beverly always works. The most fun, interesting, exciting people are the ones you surround yourself with. So anywhere we went would be a good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
You know, the whole idea for my book/podcast The Singers Talk came from a drink I had with Eddie Vedder in a bar in Toronto. Eddie is obviously the singer of Pearl Jam. And at the time, I was just starting to sing for my band Kingsize. He and I spent a good deal of time talking about our love of music, and he was just as cool and down to earth as you would hope he would be. And at the end of the night, we parted ways, and that’s when it hit me: I just spent a few hours hanging out with one of the greatest singers of our time, and I never asked him how he takes care of his voice?! How does he not blow it out every night of the tour!? I’m an idiot… and that’s how the book/podcast came to life. So, a big shoutout to Eddie Vedder for the inspiration.
