We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, what do you attribute your success to?
I would say perseverance. Aside from being passionate about my brand and what I do, persevering and believing in myself has been the biggest factor that’s allowed me to push through any obstacles I’ve faced. Big and small.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Puerto Rican photographer based out of Rockaway Beach, NY under my brand name: Atilano Images

My desire to take photos and turn it into a business stemmed from my love of being creative and framing shots in a particular way. I enjoy working with models to come up with concepts to style and create images that can be really unique or really natural.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along this journey of growing my photo business is you have to maintain confidence in yourself and your skill. I think in a world where we can all see each other’s work and profiles, it’s so easy to compare and not feel like your work is just as good. But believing in yourself will open up so many doors and reshape the possibilities on what you think can happen. There’s a seat at the table for everyone.

I just want the world to know that my brand is fully committed to working with all models of color. My one desire is to see more black and Latinx faces and models on magazine covers, ads, and billboards. I want to help people feel more confident in themselves and use my brand to really build a community of individuals who enjoy art, photos, creativity, and overall bringing their thoughts to reality.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
New York is of course one of thee best places for food. One particular spot I really enjoy is “375 Chicken N Fries.” They serve really unique dishes of chicken with multiple sauces and dressings. If you’re the type of person that likes PB&J on their chicken that place is for you.

Museums are really abundant here as well. Places like the Guggenheim, the MoMA all are a great experience to learn about art past and present.

For views of the city, it’s definitely worth a visit to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. You can see an entire landscape of lower Manhattan in action. It’s an amazing view especially at night.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have been able to fully pursue photography as a business for myself without the support and push from my close group of friends. Since high school they’ve always had my back and encouraged me. So shoutout to Joshua and Tashaun.

I cannot forget the models and peers I’ve had the pleasure of working with as well. Big shoutout to my guy Edwin Lunes for helping me navigate and branch into the fashion world.
