Meet Javid Javadi | Scholar & Activist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Javid Javadi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Javid, what’s your definition for success?
Most people correlate success to financial stability. Although I have nothing but respect for individuals who feel this way, for me, I correlate success with happiness. If I am living a happy life, then I am living a successful life. Herein, to succeed means to be happy.
But what is happiness? It’s different for everyone, but for me, it is to be with loved ones, while working towards something that is somehow helping out the community/society. Helping out the community in some way, shape, or form is essential for my success, because if I am not helping any one, I would not feel good about myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Getting to where I am today most importantly involved using rejection and failure as motivation for the future. I am someone who always gets more motivated and determined after I get face failure. This is something that has helped me overcome all of the challenges I have faced in my life. Failure is the pathway to success. If I get rejected from 5 jobs, I’ll apply to 10 more. If I receive a bad grade on an exam, I’ll do better on the next one. This mindset is one that has helped me overcome many of the challenges in my life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Everyone in my life has influenced the person that I have become. From people whose names I have never known, to people whose names I call every day, to people whose names I wish to never speak again, every step on my journey has been influenced by my surroundings.
An example of a time in which an individual whose name I will never know influenced my life, was a time in which I was driving home from school. As I was 5 minutes out from my home, I noticed a homeless man walking down the street, and a Mercedes-Benz parked about 10 yards in front. A women came out of the car and went towards the homeless man with a Starbucks Frappuccino, and a croissant in hand. Although I did not get to see what occurred next, due to the fact that I was required to make the next right turn on the next light, I can only imagine that the women was giving the man food. After pondering it for some time, I realized that the women had no idea that the homeless man would be walking on that street at that time, given that he must have randomly been walking in that area. Herein, the women did not specifically buy the products for the man, but for herself, but realized that the man needed it more, so she handed it off to him. This inspired me to do better.
Needless to say, family has also played an essential part in my life. My parents had trusted me with an abundance of freedom starting at a very young age. This was something that could have led to major consequences, such as becoming a victim to drugs, or something that would lead to a beautiful, independent, healthy life. As someone who has not fallen a victim to drugs, I believe that I have achieved the latter.
