We had the good fortune of connecting with JAWAN.mp3 and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JAWAN.mp3, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking led to some of the most significant success in my life and career. A recent example is me quitting my job at the start of the pandemic to pursue music full-time. People thought I was crazy, but I made up my mind about what I wanted and saw it as all or nothing. Definitely took a lot of practical steps before doing so, but once I jumped, I watched God match my faith with unimaginable reward. Not sure we’d have the pleasure of speaking today had I not bet on myself. I’ve been calling 2022 my “Year of Yes” (shout out to Shonda Rhimes), where I’m saying yes to everything that terrifies me. I see that fear as a signal, and I trust that on the other side of it is the growth I’m seeking.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. And I’ve always loved storytelling. So when I realized that I could combine the two and become a songwriter, my world opened up.
Doing it professionally came with its challenges, though, because my desire to create would conflict with my habit of doubting. “Am I cut out for this? What if I fail? Actually, what if I succeed?” Thankfully, my love for the music outweighed my fear.
And, ultimately, saying yes to a music career revealed a big part of my purpose to me. A bulk of my life’s work has been about pushing through fear to realize my greatest self, and in doing so, I can light the way for others to do the same.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from Mississippi and grew up surrounded by nature. So I always vote for a park like Runyon or the beach. Anywhere where I can connect with Mother Nature. Plus, you gotta have the street tacos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my Mama. I wouldn’t be who I am today without her and everything she’s done to make sure I succeeded. I’ll never forget her driving me 18-hours straight to New York City so I could pursue my dream of being in the music industry. That’s just one example of the countless sacrifices she’s made to see my brother and me reach our greatest potential. Thank you, Mama. I’m gonna make sure you get it back tenfold.
