We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Maturan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After graduating from film school, I worked in the industry but I wasn’t really doing what I wanted to do. I wanted to create my own videos and be my own boss. At the same time, I was a freelance videographer trying to pay the bills. I was asked to film a lot of weddings and events.

After a year or so, I decided this could be good side business. I was my own boss, created the videos I wanted to create, and it was easy for me. Doing weddings/events every weekend really helped me become a better videographer, editor, and creator. This only gave me confidence to become an all around video creator.

Now, I have created and filmed all types of videos from clothing, food, real estate, and events. While still having my main business in wedding videography and photography.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is my whole story. It is a culmination of everything I’ve learned in life, as well as, everything that peaks my interests. The one thing about me is I have an interest in so many things. I have a passion sports, movies, cars, cameras, video games, and of course photography/videography. All these passions lead to how I tackle personal and professional life.

Stories in movies have helped me learn about life in general and movies have also helped me find my photography/videography style. Cars, cameras, and video games helped me with learning new technology that I may need for the business and it has also taught me how to have fun in life. Sports have shaped my work ethic and my strive to get better in whatever I do.

Along the way, I’ve learned that we are constantly learning. There is no end to learning. I strive everyday to become a better artist/creator and person. It is because of this I push my art/brand/business to become better

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This leads back to all my many interests. First, I would show them my Filipino culture. I would show them all the Filipino foods around the city, like Fork & Spoon, Cuisine of the Philippines. I have to also take them to a Laker game and hang out around LA Live. Then maybe, end the night at Eighty Two an arcade/bar.

The next few places I would take them are places during the day. Petersen Automotive Museum for my love of cars. See some old/new/unique cars. I would also take them to Zuma beach to relax and maybe go body boarding or surfing. We can end the night and watch a movie at an IMAX theatre.

There are so much more to see but for me doing any of these with all the family and friends would be the best way to do it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. They have molded me to become the best person that I am now. When I was younger, I did not know what I wanted to do or be. All they asked of me was to get my college degree in anything. After switching my major a couple times and ending with filmmaking, they helped me so so much at every turn. They helped me mentally, emotionally, and financially until I found what I loved to do. To this day they still help guide me in everyday life. I owe them a lot.

And of course to my wife, Kristin. She helped change my life. She gave me the strength and support to go after whatever I wanted in life.

My parents are the foundation and my wife is what keeps that foundation unbreakable.
