We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Riggio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
To have a back up plan or a plan b. If your heart is in it, there’s no reason to settle for a less desirable life.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I am an artist that creates mixed media hanging sculptures. I work with a variety of mediums including paper, paint, found wood and epoxy resin. I’m most excited to get up each day and create new work.

I worked many day jobs for 15 years before becoming a full-time artist. It’s been very difficult, both emotionally and financially. But making art is what I was put on this earth to do. There’s no other way to go but forward.

I’ve learned not to compromise your work or your integrity for a paycheck. It’s ok to say no to projects that don’t feel right or don’t align with your way of seeing the world.

I don’t want the world to know anything about me except the work I create. The most important thing for me is to share my artwork with anyone who cares to look upon it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In LA, hiking in the Burbank hills is the best. Burgers and fries at Monty’s are amazing. The pizza at Mohawk Bend is fantastic. And everything at Something Vegan in Taluca Lake is unreal. The coffee at intelligencia is always mind blowing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are too many who have inspired me and supported my decision to follow my heart. The one who continues to support and encourage me daily is my wife.

Without her, I’m sure I would have returned to a cubicle a long time ago.
