We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Styles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
We all have a unique story to share with the world whether it’s to educate, inspire or heal, we have a responsibility to help someone get through those challenging or dark times.
As an author and someone who helps others share their unique story by giving them the blueprint for writing and self publishing their book through my 8 week course, I come across clients who think that their story does not matter simply because their story may not have as much drama and trauma as other stories, so they think that people may not be interested in what they have to say. But this is false, your story has as much value and healing as the next story because someone is going through the same challenges or dark path that you came out of so why would you be selfish with a testimony that God has brought you out of to share? It’s my job to break this type of mindset with my clients and help them see that their story matters.
As a writing coach, I also hear people who say that they can’t find the time to dedicate to writing their book due to their busy schedule. But it’s as simple as finding a two hour block of time to dedicate to your writing even if you have to start your day two or three hours earlier than normal. It’s really making a decision to commit like you would with anything else. If you spend two hours a day four days out of the week writing at least 500 words, that’s 2000 words a week. If you’re consistent and do that for 10 to 12 weeks you’ll have 20,000 to 24,000 words written in your book. And 500 words and 4 days out of the week is just the bare minimum, you could commit to more words or more days and have the first draft of your book done in two to three months. If you can make that small commitment to your writing schedule, you’ll gain more confidence to go even further, but you have to start and commit first.
I also run into questions from aspiring book writers who are not sure where to begin with writing their book. It starts with defining your target audience and the people that you’re passionate on helping. Then from here, you select a niche topic (from your story) that really speaks to that group of people. My 8 week testimony to book course walks you through this process and helps you flesh out all your ideas out on paper to create a conducive outline for your book. Let me help you get started and schedule a call with me. https://rebrand.ly/
Lastly, I get clients who are afraid of being vulnerable and putting their story out into the world for strangers to read. But then I have to remind them that and their story and testimony is BIGGER than them. It’s not about YOU, it’s about using your story to make an IMPACT and change lives. So you have to get out of your own way and understand that your story will land on the right ears and will change so many lives. When this clicks in your mind, you’ll be able to move forward in confidence.
And you don’t have to be a scholarly writer to write a book. Just allow the words to fall on the page as they come to you and when your first draft is completed, I walk you through the proper channels in getting your draft edited by professionals to correct grammar usage and sentence structure. The main thing is to just COMMIT, WRITE and you’ll be on your way to a first time author. But, that’s why I’m here so let me help you. What should our readers know about your business?
The name of my publishing company is Black Wall Street Publishing which is the umbrella for my book course titled “Testimony to Life Changing Book” Learn How to Get Started in 8 Weeks and Change Lives
I teach people who’ve overcome challenges in life to take their testimony and turn it into a life changing book so they can educate, inspire, and heal others going through similar challenges while also transforming in the process and propelling to new levels.
My course is broken down in 8 weeks followed by an extra week to recap on the 8 milestones to writing and self-publishing your book using my E.D.I.F.Y method:
E – Establishing a target audience and personal story
D – Draft outline and complete first draft
I – Improve your first draft
F – Fine-tune your manuscript
Y – You’re ready for publishing
I intentionally designed my course as a small intimate group coaching held online once a week for one hour where I walk you through the process of writing and self publishing your book while also giving you action steps to take so we can discuss at the next meeting. This is so I can dedicate myself to giving you all the attention you need to successfully write and self publish your book.
You may see other similar courses that are offering to help you write AND publish your book in 30, 60 or 90 days, but not my course. From experience, I believe that there should be a steady pace at writing your first book or any book at that matter and taking the necessary time to put out the BEST version of your book is always the best option. By taking your time to put together a well-written book without grammatical and sentence structure errors as well as proper book formatting etiquette will set your book apart from the 30, 60 and 90 day books. Quality over Quantity.
After I was laid off from my job as a radio producer in 2017, I was given an epiphany to tell inspiring stories to IMPACT change but to also share my knowledge with others and teach them how to educate, inspire and heal others through life experiences packaged into a well-written book. I am here to help you. Hit the link so we can set up a time to talk. https://rebrand.ly/
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many things to do in Los Angeles, that it’s really impossible to do it all. For those that’s visiting L.A for the first time I’m sure you’ll want to explore the tourist areas. So I would take you to Hollywood Blvd to see the Hollywood stars, the wax museum and catch a TMZ one hour tour.
The next day we’ll do some hiking at the popular trail Runyon Canyon and take them close to the Hollywood sign for photos. After that we’ll hit up a beach, probably Malibu or Dockweiler beach. Santa Monica Beach is nice too plus they have a Bumba Gump restaurant which is one of my favorite restaurants.
As far as nightlife, I definitely take them to the Perch LA downtown. It’s a restaurant/rooftop lounge and the food is pretty good. For the other nights I would take them to Maestros, Crustaceans which are in Beverly Hills, Firefly in Studio city and Vibrato Jazz Grill in Woodland Hills. These restaurants serve really good food and the ambiance is nice!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
You know I believe that we are all on this earth to inspire the next person so I want to first thank my wife and my family and close friends for always supporting me but also those that inspire me from afar. There are so many people who inspire me daily just by being brave enough to commit to something and really go after it and of course those doing what they love. I’m inspired by the smallest detail so there are too many names that I would have to mention, but know if I’m following you on social media and you’re living out your dreams, I’m definitely inspired by you and I see you!
