We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazlyn Miller aka Brown Rich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazlyn, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success, and the success of my brand, has been me staying true to myself. That has always been such an imperative factor to me in creating my personal brand. It was definitely something I had to grow into, but also something I was always doing naturally ,and wasn’t really aware of the power of it quite yet. Not in a sense of, being someone I wasn’t and then learning to be myself; but being 100% okay with going into these rooms with MY humor, MY work ethic, MY confidence, MY style or MY energy. Very frequently this came with the reality of someone not returning the energy, the smile, and maybe not even wanting to work with me or believe in who I was as my own brand. But what I did realize was , it ALWAYS led me to the people who were a positive light, and could actually add to the energy I did want around me. It created natural relationships, which in turn led to some of my biggest jobs and greatest friendships. It became much more important to me that someone could appreciate me for me (of course while keeping my professionalism and work ethic on 100%) , and that they too were okay with themselves and/or learning to work from a real internal place. Of course, I would still work with people who were working from a place of projecting insecurities, but me always staying true to me, helped me through those jobs and allowed my brand to keep growing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a professional dancer. So for my journey, that entails: music videos, award shows, commercials and live shows. It’s a very exciting life to live. I’ve gotten paid to travel to many countries and states! That’s one of my favorite parts, seeing the world doing what I love. In my opinion, energy is everything! I have exerted SO much energy into this job, and in my mind, that’s my super power when I’m in front of that camera or on that stage. I never trained for any of this, my training happened on these sets, and in these rehearsals or auditions. Sometimes, to this day, I have anxiety about what I’m walking into, because I know I’m not trained and I struggle sometimes. But once again, thankfully, there is always a person, or people that God places in my life on these jobs to help me stay focused and on top of what I’m supposed to be doing. I’ve learned so much by HAVING to be a student all the time. I have no choice, and really, that’s how I would choose it every time. I’ve learned an enormous amount of business in this field. Contracts, knowing what’s right and what’s wrong, numbers, rates….you name it. To me, that’s an even more important aspect then the actual job. I’ve also learned the importance of using my agent, aka, opening my mouth when I have questions, comments or concerns. When you work for your money or your rights , there should be no fear in fighting for what’s yours and what’s right, professionally of course.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ahhh LA, there is literally SO much to do! I first off, like to show them the actual city. Compton, Carson, Long Beach, LA. In my opinion, that’s where the real culture, history, food and good people are. I would take them to the Culver City stairs, so they could get a beautiful view of LA. I would take them to my house for a good meal. I’d take them to one of our many dope museums around Hollywood. Definitely would take them to In-n-out, Roscoes chicken and waffles (Although I’m vegetarian now, they still have to try it lol)..I have tons of friends who throw events, so we would definitely slide through a couple of those! So many things!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give all of my credit to God of course, finding God in my own light helped me to find my way. But of course, I have been given an amazing family that has been my ultimate support system. Sometimes I’d get off set at 4AM, and would have school at 8am. I’d get home and my mom would get up and cook me breakfast to ensure I could be fueled, and have some time to relax before getting up and going. My agency, MSA has been helpful in guiding me along the way, answering all my questions and concerns! HEY TT! I have so many friends that have been there to listen to my rants, and encourage me, as well as giving me opportunities. I’ve gained so much inspiration and insight from my friends that have stuck with me through this. My boyfriend, Mike, has been such a force in my life as far as making sure my head is always screwed on in the midst of whatever is thrown my way. I appreciate you for loving me through this crazy life I live. I also want to shoutout anyone who has given me a chance. Whether it be on a job, or in my personal life….I don’t take it for granted.
