We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazzy Mejia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazzy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Creating & building a pastry business in a city where anything is possible was difficult. But It all came down to one day . One day , in which I did not expect I would be going from coaching cheer & dance to deciding to start my baking journey.

One day I was craving something sugary and sweet , so I decided to go to pastry store. Where I found myself standing infront of my menu thinking ‘ I want more , something different then vanilla, chocolate , red velvet’. Instantly , an idea of , more so a “what if” . What if someone made pastry , flavors and snacks everyone loves in LA and in the Hispanic community. In came the idea of “Horchata and mazapan” pairing but in a cupcake, sounded delicious. so I drove home and stopped by a grocery store on my way . Got in the kitchen and Made my first ever LAzucar favorite the “HORCHATA MADNESS”. It Didn’t stop there, I asked family ,friends what their favorite snacks were. In came in ideas that later became more LAzucar favorites such as my “Animal Cracker” , ” Frosty Pebbles” ,” Oreo Madness” and our “Strawberry nesquik”.

Building this concept to make it reality was definitely a challenge , trying to open up the minds of LA to flavors untraditonal in the pastry world. And safe to say we are succeeding , LAzucar , representing our city (LA) and our Hispanic community (Azucar) is here to stay and continue to amaze everyone.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Believe it or not, I Never thought id begin my own pastry empire. Ive been dancing since I was 4 years old then began coaching cheer & dance along side my family since I was 18. So being creative was always so natural to me. But creating a business, brand, menu & fan base was a little more challenging. I grew up watching my mom single handling running a business on her own while being a great mom and mentor to other children. When it came down to my business It was a challenge to open up the crowds to something unconventional such as a Sprinkle cones or a bbq cornbread cupcake, but what got us through and out there where the true foodies . The ones who love all that is food & flavors and for that we are extremely grateful. Here at LAzucar we hope to cater to every ones inner foodie and cater to everyone snack craving , one bit at a time. While also representing the Hispanic community that is Los Angeles .

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend or family member of mine where visiting LA I would definitely show them all things that make Los Angeles , LA. Our First stop would be , hands down….Silverlake ramen: Their Pork belly ramen is the perfect balance of juicy and crispy. Can’t come to LA without visiting an amusement park , Disneyland to live out every childhood dream while eating a Mac n cheese cone along with their delicious drinks to unwind from California adventure. Another place we would have to visit is Venice beach stop by see all the artist , creating right in front of your eyes and stopping by a pizza spot to get now and eat by the slice and watch the sunset and the palm trees. Last but not least end the trip with some famous LA nightlife, at a bar or club where a friend of mine DJ ROSEGAWD is setting the most genuine and fun experiences you can have in LA , one song at a time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
LAzucar would not be LAzucar without the support of all our customers, vendor pals that we have met doing events such ad the frogtown market place & at 1st impression dance studio. Along with personal Family and friends Who continuously, are my taste tester every time a new flavor comes out. Thank you to all for spreading the word and supporting all that is LAzucar. From the beginning where we were solely cupcakes only to the day we traveled to Ireland and New Orleans and brought back our LA twist to their new LAzucar favorites ,Scones & Beignets.
