We had the good fortune of connecting with Nisha Bhatia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nisha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

My husband Jay and I were born and brought up in India. We have been living in the US for about 20 years now.

When our daughter was born, I always worried about what I would tell her and teach her about the world. How will we help her belong, but at the same time remember and embrace her roots, India, Hinduism, our family’s culture….Jay and I were aligned in the fact that we wanted her to make her own associations and memories. And not just rely on ours.

I learned by experience that this age group learns and understands by doing- activities of different kinds. And realized that there is nothing in the market that curates that experience and teaches kids about different cultures!

So I decided to launch Festivity- activity boxes for children themed around festivals from around the world- last year we did 7 festivals and this year, after maternity leave and birth of my 2nd child- I am ready for the 5 boxes we have planned for 2022! Raksha Bandhan, Rosh Hashanah, Dia de Los Muertos, Diwali and our popular Holiday box.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an electrical engineer by education- but a terrible one at that! I came to the US to do my Masters in Engineering Management at USC and learned about Supply Chain & Operations here. After experimenting in a few roles at different companies around the LA area including Smart & Final, Warner Bros, Activision & Pacsun, I obtained by MBA from UCLA.

After that, I knew I loved Supply Chains & the prospect of doing different projects for different companies really appealed to me. I started with PwC 8 years ago and I still love what I do everyday! My work experience and history gives me the ability to define the problem statement clearly, think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions for an existing, important problem facing parents of young children these days.

I learned how difficult it is to get your word out on social media. That was probably harder than even launching my own business!

What I want the world to know- Festivity aims to help your children understand and appreciate different cultures from around the world. We use the same 5 components to introduce different traditions to your children- a book, an activity kit, a celebration kit, a recipe and flash cards- these are included in every box, no matter the festival.
Most importantly, our boxes are not religious, but focus instead on the storytelling around the traditions and cultural significance of the festival
