Meet JD Nielson | Founder of CoLab

We had the good fortune of connecting with JD Nielson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JD, how does your business help the community?
CoLab exists as an extension of Print Renegades that focuses on providing resources to directly support local artists and entrepreneurs. It provides creative space for not only professionals, but also youth and curious individuals interested in learning about screen printing or working on other art projects.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
CoLab is all about the creatives that utilize the space. As Print Renegades has gone through the typical motions of small business and all of its’ cycles, CoLab has still remained true to its’ original goal of operating for those needing space to learn and grow in their field of art. While many of the guests have been screen printers looking to make the jump away from their at-home print stations, we’ve seen many others from different walks of life. Music artists, photographers, and even youth programs have found value in our unique space.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would have to take them over to THE LUME without a doubt. Also a trip out to Venice to check out the amazing melting pot of culture, food and art.

The Arts District

FairFax District for a tour of some iconic fashion brands that were birthed via screen printing.

International Printing Museum!

And, of course , Print Renegades/CoLab to see all the amazing prints they do on a day to day basis and be able to see the great work of a super professional print shop!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Every Renegade that has been with us over the years! Some were with us for under a year and some for several years – but each and every one of them brought great work ethic and passion that is necessary to succeed in this industry. Also the local LA folks that we’ve created pieces for. The appreciation that they show us for always standing with smaller artists and entrepreneurs is a constant reminder of why we love what we do.
