We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Soul and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe the success of my brand is largely because of my faith in God and trusting in the vision that he has given me for my life. Faith gives me the strength to keep moving forward even when it seems like the odds are against me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been writing and singing my whole life. As a small child I had big dreams of sharing my music with the world. However, I did not come from a musical family and I had no major connections. My family believed that a future in music was nothing more than a “pipe dream”. In 2012, after the loss of a close friend, I decided that I needed to pursue music seriously and fiercely. It felt like my life depended on it. The road certainly hasn’t been easy. I’ve heard hurtful criticisms and I’ve been sabotaged by those I thought had my back. However, I continued to believe that I had something special and a story that would inspire others. Through every hurdle, I just continued to push forward and did what I could with what I had at the time while honing my craft. I am proud of the brand that I have built that is rooted in body positivity, self-love, and mental health awareness. Starting with a one song demo, I began to invest in myself and expand my brand into plus-size modeling, My most recent Album, In My Mind, released October 2020, has been my most successful project to date. It has been amazing to see my messages of love, struggle, and perseverance touch the hearts of so many. I am proud of the example I set for young girls, especially my daughter. Showing them that you can work hard and build a legacy without compromising your morals and your values. My music is genre bending. I often share in my music what I don’t always feel comfortable sharing in verbal discussion. My music is bigger than me. It’s about healing others through my stories. Sharing the intimate and broken pieces of myself so that listeners can see that there is beauty in their broken spaces. I am currently working on a new concept EP entitled “Connections” that will examine the connections we have with ourselves and others. The first single “Strong Connection” has already been released on all streaming platforms and the video is also available on Apple Music and YouTube.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to everyone who has poured into my journey along the way, Specifically my daughter Valerie who has been my greatest inspiration and my record label One Nation Under God Records for believing in me and helping to take my career to the next level.
