We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeff, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
As a performer it is easy to forget that you are not just performing for yourself, but that there is this mysterious group of people sitting in the dark who are craving something from you. For me, the most important factor behind the success of my business is the relationship with my audience. Whether performing walk around magic at a wedding or on stage, the audience is everything.
My goal with every performance is to create life-long impressions from a brief encounter. I strive to be both an enjoyable person and performer. So enjoyable that the people will want to hire me again and again to share that experience with their loved ones and guests for their events. So in general my success comes from living in the present moment and aim to have fun, that will become contagious. This relationship even extends offstage to social media and my booking team as well. Finally, I strive to perform the hardest hitting magic I can, even if it will take years to master.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In general, I do not take myself or the magic too seriously which keeps the atmosphere light and fun because at the end of the day it’s entertainment. My style of magic utilizes suspense, magic technique, and my personality to increase drama for the strongest close-up magic possible, and never forget the all-important connection with the audience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you are visiting LA, we are getting a wonderful brunch buffet at the Magic Castle with crab legs, carving stations, and magic shows it is one of the top brunches I have ever been to. Then we are headed to the Magic Apple, the best magic shop in the LA area to rub elbows with the greatest magicians in the business and stock up on new and old magic supplies. Our next activity will be to sharpen our critical thinking in the atmospheric escape rooms of the Escape Hotel in Hollywood. The Escape Hotel has the interior of a luxurious hotel from the 1920s, it is like walking back in time and has the best escape rooms I have found anywhere. Hungry again? Then it is time for amazing sushi, drinks, and entertainment we have reservations at Mainro supperclub. With a dj on deck at all times, aerialists, singers, and magic Mainro is always where the party is at. Finally we will retire to Black Rabbit Rose for more incredible signature cocktails, magic shows, and some of the best live bands in LA.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As the old saying goes, “Behind every great magician is an even greater manager.” Okay, that’s not really a saying, but I have the luxury to say that it’s a saying for me. So, the person I want to shout out is my incredible business manager of over a decade Ryan Luevano of Maestro and Magic Productions. I have learned a lot about the business side of performing since I started my magic career over 15 years ago. As an artist I have also learned that I’d rather not have to handle the business side of my career. It is nice to tell a potential client to wants to book me, “Please talk to my manager.” I trust him to hammer out the details in a manner that with benefit myself and the client. Ryan really steps up and rounds out the experience for the customer. Additionally, he pushes me to be a better performer. He even has guided me into the world of acting. I’ve already booked three films projects this year, but more about that later.
