We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeannine Self and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeannine, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I’m usually always in favor of taking a risk when the ultimate benefit of it is to better myself. There are two kinds of people that view a favorable situation. One is, “Why can’t that happen to me”? And the other is, “If they can attain that, then why can’t I”? I have always been the latter. Taking risks thus far in my life has proven to me that if you want something bad enough, you CAN have it. Most everything is attainable with persistence. As for my career, taking risks is something I’m extremely proud of myself for. I walked away from working for others, to pursue self employment. That means, I gave up a guaranteed paycheck, as well as the benefits. Just to pursue my dreams and my happiness. That’s a huge risk that I took and it’s the best decision I could have ever made for myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a freelance makeup artist means that I get to pursue my passion of being a makeup artist while making my own schedule and setting my own pay rate. Oh, and taking vacation whenever I’d like as well. That’s the American dream if you ask me! As with any kind of artist, we are all unique. We all have our own style. And I believe that’s the beauty of being a makeup artist in a large city like Los Angeles, it’s what sets us apart. Im proud of myself because I’m a self taught makeup artist. I’ve got lot’s of room to grow, but I’m a perfectionist and I hold a hight standard with my work. As far as how I got to where I am today, I spent over 10 years working at many retail makeup counters, learning the art. Also learning that working for someone else just wasn’t how I wanted to pursue my career. But as with anything in life, practice and persistence is how you persevere. I’ve had my fair share of set backs in my lifetime. Each time rising back up. That’s what you’re suppose to do. You learn from your life lessons and take those lessons with you to move forward. I love setting goals and dreams for myself and then working towards them. That’s who I am. I’m very independent, I’m an optimist and I live my life by looking for the silver lining in all things.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, this IS Hollywood. So naturally when someone comes here, they want to see what this city is known for. It’s the land of stars and celebrity history. Being a tourist in Los Angeles is so fun because there’s so much to see. My sister came to visit me one year and we hopped on one of the many bus tours that are offered here. It took us to view some celebrity homes and landmarks. We had a blast! I love being spontaneous, so I don’t like to plan too much in advance, but here’s some fun things that I do recommend: – You gotta go down the famous Rodeo Drive, just to see it. – Go see the Hollywood sign and get a pic. That sign is a landmark that this city is known for. – I recommend walking Hollywood Blvd to see all of the celebrities stars. – Try to attend a taping of a tv show. Those are so fun! – If you are a Vanderpump Rules fan, then you’ll want to go eat or get a drink at Sur, Pump and Tom Tom. – I personally have always been a fan of Marilyn Monroe. So I have driven by her home, sadly where she was when she passed away. – That famous location of OJ’s home on Rockingham. (Although the actual home has now been demolished). Or even the scene of the crime on Bundy Drive! – The beach is one of my very favorite escapes. Whether Venice Beach is your thing, the Santa Monica Pier, or even Malibu, the beach is always a must! – Drive past the Beverly Hills Hotel and even the Chateau Marmont. Such famous landmarks with an abundance of history.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sister Lisa, has always been my biggest fan. Through all of my major decisions and hurdles in life as well as my career, she’s been my biggest form of support.
