We had the good fortune of connecting with Jakkia Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jakkia, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The most important decision I made was never to put my livelihood in someone else’s hands. I decided to work for myself and not depend on someone else’s decision to pay me or take that opportunity away by firing me from a job I needed ever again.

As a professional hair braider, I’ve always wanted to make sure I’d be available for my clients. When they have an appointment to be punctual and provide not on a quality service but a great experience as well. I can remember when I use to allow clients t text me and if write down my appointments. Until one day I double booked two clients and accidentally booked a client on a day I took off to spend time with my sons for the holiday. The lady I booked came to her appointment and the shop was closed. I thought I booked her for the following day but I mixed my days up. I felt really bad for not being there for the appointment and after that day I chose to use an online booking site, that not only allow my clients to book at anytime based on my availability but allows me to prioritize and organize my schedule as a single mom as well. I use to work in a few different shops. I use to get to the shop early so I’d set the vibe turn on some music and make sure the shop was neat and clean before the day started. I worked with a lot of different stylist even barbers so if refer clients to them based on the clients need of service whenever they weren’t in the shop. Not really noticing then but I was actually running a salon. Things started to change and One day the shop had a meeting and I wasn’t there that day, I came to find that I was being discussed and some people felt I shouldn’t have my kids at the shop with me. But I had no other choice. I felt betrayed by how some people talked about me and my situation behind my back and never addressing any issues with me prior to. So, I decided to leave and go to my own private studio suite. I was able to have my sons with me and still provide I nice environment for my clients as well. After a year in my private studio I decided to expand my business ”Passion With Purpose” and open a bigger space that would allow me to run my Braid Studio & Beauty Supply together. Where I host my monthly group beginner braid classes also. Teaching beginners the basic skills and techniques for braiding hair. Ad also hosting my ”Give Back Event” every year for Thanksgiving. This has not been easy but it’s been worth it! I’m still learning every day and enjoying the journey. The key is to stay focused and have faith. It amazes me every day to see how much my business has grown over the two years I’ve been here. I’d want the world to know that a single mom who was fired from her job and decided that she’d never put her and her kid’s livelihood in the hands of someone else. Trust the process and manifest your life with Faith and Prayer. My story is the reason why my business and brand is ”Passion With Purpose”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m more of a home body but I love to be spontaneous and do exciting things. I love the beach, theme parks, and restaurants with amazing food!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Giving thanks to GOD for Blessing me with my gifts, skills and talents. My 2 sons for keeping me grounded and focused not only on building this legacy for them, but leading by example so they’ll know how hard work pays off. I’d like to thank all of my clients and customers who’ve stuck with me over the years instilling their trust in me to provide their protective style hair services and supporting my business. I’d also like to thank RastAFri for allowing me to be apart of a ”sisterhood” of dope women being in their ambassadors program. Making Great connections, experiences and memories.
