We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Payne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe taking risk is inevitable in any successful business while of course one needs to evaluate the marketplace, your business’s place in it, and the trends of the market before taking those risks.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been fortunate to have always felt that what I do for a career…sound mixing… is something that I not only have a natural skill/inclination for but still something that I totally love doing. I was basically self taught by starting off doing projects in my home studio and eventually moved to Los Angeles with a desire to do it professionally in a a top market. So much of success, in my mind, came from being fearless regarding jumping straight into things I was perhaps not educated in and trusting my instincts and taste and believing that those instincts would prove to be my strongest ally. As for lessons I would say that I am continually reminding myself to trust those instincts and be open to the changes in not only the technology in audio post production but also in the landscape of the industry.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Certainly the beach cities of Los Angeles are a wonderful place to start… Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach… and of course Malibu. I was fortunate enough to be a Malibu resident for over 15 years and in my opinion the beauty and serenity of Malibu cannot be surpassed in Southern California. As for dining experiences there are so many wonderful places here in Santa Monica as well as other parts of the city like Downtown Los Angeles, West Hollywood, and the South Bay cities.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to show appreciation and commend the dozens of employees of Eleven, past and present, who have contributed in the longevity of Eleven (which was founded in 1999). Over these nearly 25 years the industry, technology, and overall fabric of the business has continued to evolve and change and I have been fortunate to have hired so many talented individuals that have been able to adapt to these changes and bring a fresh outlook and approach to the audio post production industry and Eleven’s role in it.
