We had the good fortune of connecting with Jehona (JoJo) Corrales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jehona (JoJo), how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started teaching Pilates, I operated at 110%. My entire life was consumed with continuing education, planning classes and sessions. I would set a goal for something I wanted to achieve and I wouldn’t stop until I made it to that goal. I never took the time to celebrate and enjoy the accomplishments. I would immediately find a new challenge and pursue that. I was working 13 hour days multiple days a week. I was burning myself out. Now, if I have a lull in my schedule, I do not immediately try to fill it. I am forcing myself to slow down because I realized that I was burning myself out. My personal life was almost nonexistent and it affected creativity of my sessions. So as I’ve entered into the comedy world, I’ve adopted a more relaxed approach. I’m taking my time and I’m enjoying every bit of it. Allowing for lulls, reflection and improvements. Both my Pilates and Comedy careers have benefited.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve fallen in love with both Pilates and Comedy for the same reasons. They are both creative and analytical. There’s no such thing as perfection in movement or art but you can always work towards precision. It sounds cliché but hard work and dedication is the approach I always take professionally. I take my career/art very seriously,; with the reminder that what I do is not that serious. I think its too easy to get sucked into the grind and remembering that I’m not saving the world helps me to maintain balance in my life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1) The first thing I would do is take my friend to hike the Hollywood sign. Then we would go to the cannabis cafe to wind down and relax. Then meet up with friends at the Rendition bar in Studio City. 2) The next day we would go to Nesmon cafe for brunch and then off to go on a hike at Fryman Canyon and then finish the day off with a nice dinner at BLVD Steak.
3) the Hollywood, walk of fame and the Hollywood forever cemetery. Then off to grab a bite at Mother Wolfe.
5) Beverly Hills to go shopping at rodeo drive and take pictures in front of the Beverly Hills line. Then I would head off to LACMA and the La Brea tar pits. I would finish up the day at the Grove shopping and have a bite to eat at the farmers market.
6) I would spend the day in Venice and Santa Monica. We would take a trip to the Venice canals and have a nice meal at AOC.
7) spend a day downtown where I visit all the staples of the city: the Broad, union station, the central library, and Pueblo de Los Angeles. Then off to Grand Central market and have a bite to eat at Villa tacos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate my shout out to several amazing women. Lora Anderson Pavilack, Owner of Pilates studio city. I’ve known Lora for almost 15 years. She certified me to teach Pilates, I’ve worked for her and trained with her. She has been supportive of me in every aspect of my life. She’s my biggest cheerleader. As far as the comedy world has gone, I have found that women have been incredibly supportive of one another. Some of the female comics that have been the most encouraging of me during my comedy journey are: Beth Stelling, Lisa Orkin and Sammy Weiser. There are so many more woman I can think of but we would be here for a while….
