We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Ash and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, how do you think about risk?
I think you are very dramatic using the word “Risk” and we should probably say : “taking a chance” instead. Risk involve danger and sometimes just using the word put us in a state of fear which is the reason why we do not act on it . People always fear the negative and don’t focus on the positive. I believe no matter what the risk you take, it is always a great lesson to learn and help you evolve in the direction you are going .
I left everything behind in France , my basketball career, my friends, my family, my comfortable life and move to California by myself .It was honestly very scary but the best decision I made in my entire life . It was a big “risk” or “chance” that I took and it wasn’t easy and it is still not easy today . But my question is : How bad do you want it? How committed to your goals and dreams are you ? because when you look at the bigger picture and know that every step happens for a reason , you start enjoying the process and put yourself in a state of peace of mind no matter the challenge you are facing.
I try to put myself in a position of constant change and grabbing opportunities without knowing the outcome has become my routine . I put my dreams first and leave my ego and overthinking aside and just go for it . I think changing your mindset and the way you see “taking risks” is the key to success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer songwriter , my purpose is to serve people through music , writing about real experience and honest truth. I believe being real is what sets me apart , embracing my background , who I am , where I come from is a big part of my journey as an artist. finding beauty in the darkness and the light and turn every experiences into Art is my special skill .
I think there are no secrets , if you want to reach your goals you have to put the work , learn every day something new , master your craft so when the opportunities come to you you can be more than ready . The life of an artist is not easy , it’s a long rocky road filled with self doubt , criticism , and judgment of others . what makes it worth it the love and the passion I have for it . I know that it is my true calling , my purpose in this lifetime. The big challenge is Patience because it is not up to you sometimes . You have to see the bigger picture and understand that everyone is on his own schedule and agenda so patience and resilience are keys to success. You cannot do it alone , you need people , you need a team , you need collaboration , community and as much as I want to get everything done by myself it is honestly impossible and a very lonely road that I do not wish to take .
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them first to the Griddle Cafe for breakfast, This place is super unique and fun with their giant pancakes. I will hit all the amusement parcs , Universal studio , Disneyland and 6 flags if they can handle it . The Hollywood blvd is a must with Griffith park observatory . I would plan a concert at the Hollywood bowl . For food I love Bacari , the concept of little small plate create a real experience , The little door on 3rd street is the most beautiful restaurant in town with an amazing garden . and Oste right next door that has best Italian food in town .
By the water , in Santa Monica I would eat at Elephante , the view of the ocean is stunning .
Also how can you not spend a Sunday at Venice beach enjoying some music , walking by the beach stop by salt and straw for ice cream and do some shopping .
Mel’s Drive and Swingers are one of my favorite dinner. Open almost 24h and has this old school vibe that I love .
Yamashiro is on the to do list , the view from up hill is absolutely stunning.
Warner brothers Tour would be a must also , visiting the studios and productions site of one of the big entertainment firm is very exciting and inspiration specially for an artist like myself.
