We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenessa Acosta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenessa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Take all the risks to achieve what you want in life. Without risk theres no success or in some cases failure but it’s all about the learning process, the growth. My biggest risks were the greatest learning lessons in my life and it all got me to where I am today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Ive recently gone through a huge career change within the past year and a half. I initially moved here to pursue my career as a celebrity hairstylist in 20I7. I was doing what I thought I had always wanted to be doing In life, working on projects with some of the biggest names. But once Covid came around, I discovered my true passion.

I learned how to Dj in February of 2020 and by April I played my first event, a live steam. Towards the end of the year once outdoor distanced dining events became a thing here in LA  i was playing more and more gigs! I tried to balance both careers in the fall once my hair jobs starting picking back up but my newfound love was djing. So I made the difficult decision to end my career as hairstylist by January of 2021 and be a full time artist/Dj and focus on my new career path. I toured with my boyfriend shortly after I quit and never looked back! I’m so glad I took the risk to only do what made me happiest.

2021 was one of the best and most challenging years for me but i persevered and trusted the process. Besides djing i learned how to run a business and produce events alongside my boyfriend Art who is also a DJ/producer, one of the best in my opinion shoutout bingewatchmusic!! Together we have an artist collective and soon to be music label,  Blind Tiger LA (@blindtiger_la). We run events at our DTLA location every Thursday-Saturday, as well as two monthly events at 1720 warehouse and soon to be returning to Sound nightclub in Hollywood once a month!

Theres a lot in store for not only myself but for us and our brand/team! I’ve quickly witnessed the real disadvantages women have in the music industry but as a newly emerging Latina women i am so motivated and inspired! I’m currently learning how to produce and I and so excited for what’s to come. I feel like this is truly something I was meant to be doing professionally and it’s unreal I get to be doing what i love with the people I love. Forever  grateful for the growth and opportunities I’ve endured in such a short amount of time, I am only getting started!!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Im a east side girl so on Fridays I love going to larchmont. There’s the farmers market, my fav place to get lunch, Great White and the yummiest gf vegan bakery, Erin Mckennas! In the evenings I enjoy going to sunset blvd in Silver lake to walk around and get dinner and drinks either at El condor, Bacari or Kombu sushi. Such a great street to explore and support small business, from vintage clothing stores to restaurants!

Saturday morning is usually show day and sometimes I need an outfit to wear so I’ll go shopping!  In a last minute pinch id go to Fairfax and melrose and for the extra exclusive pieces i like to go to our friends thrift shop downtown, Sold out society. Shoutout Royal Villans! Typically I’ll do sushi for dinner and my current go to is Kzunori, love me some hand rolls! Afterwards we’d start off the night at  Sound Nightclub and when it ends we’d go to our after hours event, Blind TIger where I normally DJ every Saturday!

Typically i dont get home until 6am so Sundays are for R&R. I usually like to go to Little pine for some yummy vegan brunch and a matcha! I love spending my Sundays at the beach, My top 3 favorite beaches in LA currently are marina del rey, point dume and el matador. To end the most perfect Sunday funday it is a must to go to Reel in for dinner when in the area!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to the little girl who dreamed big, To my parents and family for supporting me when i decided to move to LA when i was 17 and still continue to stand by my side as i follow my dreams! Shout out to my friends who have shown me what a real community is like and take me for who I am. Shout out to my life partner, business partner and boyfriend Art for your mentorship, patience, support, love and encouragement. I would not be where i am today without you! Shout out to our Blind Tiger family and all their handwork, it’s only all possible with you guys.  Lastly shoutout to everyone who supports myself and the house music community here in Los Angeles, we do it for the people and the love of music!
