We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Chung and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had the unique opportunity of seeing my mother start her own skincare company when I was a teenager. My family immigrated from Vietnam to Minnesota when I was about a little under one year old. As far as I could remember, my mother was always business-minded and a total badass. She saw that owning her own business meant having control over her financials and her family. In the early 2000’s, our tiny family made the trek from Minnesota to California where my mother would pursue different career paths to take care of her family. It was by chance that she developed a passion for skincare and started her own brand, Forever Beaumore. Since 2007, I witnessed my mother start her own business, build a cult following among our Vietnamese American community, and develop beauty solutions that transformed the way her customers used skincare. I spent the last 15 years learning the in’s and out’s of skincare and beauty supplements at my family’s business. This instilled a kind of resilience and entrepreneurial spirit in me that I believed really helped influence my decision to start my own business when I became older. In starting Embody, I wanted to demystify skincare and make it more approachable for women. I also saw this as a great opportunity to bridge my knowledge of using eastern remedies for skincare with modern solutions to help women start glowing from within. Throughout high school, I struggled with severe acne and the experience left me scarred and insecure about my skin. I used hundreds of products and spent thousands of dollars on treatments that didn’t give me the results I wanted. Eventually, skincare became expensive and exhausting. I was tired of playing chemist with my skin when I finally decided to listen to my mother and turn to Eastern traditions to treat my skin concerns from the inside out. These Eastern beauty remedies took a whole body approach that included lifestyle changes and supplements to care for my skin from within.. In 2018, I took a risk and moved to Southern California where I began building my own team of beauty enthusiasts and working with U.S. manufacturers to develop ingestible skin care formulas because I believe that skincare should be not only effective but tasty and convenient. i believe that skincare actually starts and ends with whats inside. The human body is a beautiful thing and your face reflects it all. We’re here to change skincare.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Skin care has always played an important role in my life, whether I wanted it to or not. A combination of poor skin care hygiene and genetics left me with deep acne scars throughout my early 20’s. Like many women, it was difficult for me to feel comfortable in my own skin when I’m constantly being shown seemingly beautiful but filtered photos on social media. I dreamt about having perfect skin that was glossy, smooth, and scar-free because that defined beauty for me. I even went as far as spending hundreds of dollars on skin care laser treatments and products only to be left disappointed when I discovered those solutions are just over-the-surface and temporary. I believe that your skin is the foundation to your confidence. Once you choose to take care of the skin you’re born with, you’ll find that skin care is a beautiful journey that isn’t out of reach. I started embody to show you that your skin care journey starts inwards. Our creations are made with love and formulated to help guide you within and treat your skin concerns at the source. Embody is skincare, simplified. We’re on a mission to make skin care delicious–starting with the retinol gummy. The Retinol Gummy sold out 3 weeks before our official launch in June 2020 and has since been loved by over 2,000 women. Embody is here to change the way that women use skin care. We dare you to ditch your topicals and see what nourishing your skin from within can really do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ever since I relocated from the Bay Area to Orange County, one of my favorite things to do during my downtime is explore foodie spots, boba shops, and scenic views. Let’s start with restaurants: 1. LSXO – A speakeasy hidden gem (a restaurant inside a restaurant) at Pacific City in Huntington Beach. The Vietnamese flavors are incredible and it’s a unique experience I highly recommend. 2. Nep Brunch Cafe – I’m a huge fan of Vietnamese food, if you couldn’t already tell. In the heart of Fountain Valley, Nep offers brunch selections inspired by Vietnamese street food. 3. Oc & Lau – A tradition for many Vietnamese families during the weekend. Oc and Lau has delicious seafood with unique Vietnamese flavors that you just can’t get anywhere else. Try the balut and coconut snails when you have a chance to visit. Boba shops you must check out! 1. Prestotea 2. Feng Cha 3. Omomo Tea Shoppe Places to visit with your friends or family: 1. Irvine Spectrum 2. South Coast Mall 3. Newport Beach
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my team at embody and all the wonderful agencies we’ve had the opportunity to work with: Good Hause, IAM Agency, and Launchpop. And of course, my badass mother, Nhi. Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.
