We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn McGuirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Initially, I think the emphasis when you’re younger and fresh on the scene is: ‘when work is there, grab it’ tending then towards the vulnerability of burn out by always being ‘on’ over time I begin to realise that time off, time spent with family, friends and doing enriching things…as small as eating yummy food and petting cats!: brings the work/life balance into a more even shape
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi Shoutout, thank you for having me! I guess essentially, like most LA dwellers I am a creative of many colours. I’m Irish and my acting life started on the stage. Each footing on the creative ladder has lead me to another branch of the industry from singing and dance to writing and directing. I worked in TV for years hosting and doing TV announcing and each avenue 0f creativity I’ve explored enhances the existing ones I also work for a Contemporary Irish Arts Centre LA as the director of programming. That said I always admire the creatives that harness one skill and pursue fervently. It’s important to go after the essence of what you want most and sometimes I wish I had that wisdom. But each avenue ive explored has got me to the point iim at, so it’s not so bad! In 2017 I got a visa and a scholarship to one of the best acting schools in the world – Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre, I moved here and my work moved to the next level. Voice acting has been the newest love and you can hear my work on the Styx audio drama available where podcasts are and I look forward to recording a big period feature film I’ve been cast in about JP Morgan when Hollywood has reached the necessary agreements and creative life is a little more linear again…..well as linear as it it can be!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I been lucky to have many friends and family pass through LA during my time here and on each visit my favourite part is seeing the city a new through their perspective. Beaches, The Observatory, Melrose for a wander, live shows, theme parks, yummy vegan restaurants and rooftop drinks are my favourite bites of LA to share.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
