We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Messina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk-taking has been a defining element in both my life and career. I’ve come to understand that every time I take a risk, whether it’s in my personal life or as an artist, it pushes me to grow in ways I never expected. For me, pursuing music professionally was one of the biggest risks—I let go a stable active duty military career opportunity to dive into an industry known for its unpredictability. On top of that, being open about my mental health struggles and the realities of my relationships through my music felt like exposing my soul to the world.

Taking risks has played a crucial role in shaping who I am today. The decision to be brutally honest in my album City Rose, or co-founding “LGBT VSAP” (Veterans Suicide Awareness Program), were both risks that paid off in the sense that they allowed me to connect with others on a deeper level and push the boundaries of what I thought was possible for myself. Without those risks, I wouldn’t have found the strength to own my story and share it with the world.

For me, risk is necessary. It’s uncomfortable, and it often leads to uncertainty, but it’s where the biggest breakthroughs happen. If you’re not willing to take risks, you’re not giving yourself the chance to really explore what you’re capable of.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an artist whose work is deeply rooted in personal experience and raw emotion. My music centers around mental health and self-discovery, drawing from my own journey through some of life’s toughest challenges. What sets me apart is my willingness to be completely honest and vulnerable in my songs. I don’t shy away from difficult topics—whether it’s my struggles with self-worth, overcoming toxic relationships, or battling inner demons.

I’m most proud of my debut country album, City Rose. This project is incredibly special to me because it encapsulates a pivotal time in my life. It was born out of heartbreak but transformed into a narrative of resilience and growth. Each track is a piece of my soul, and seeing it resonate with others has been both humbling and exhilarating.

Getting to where I am today was far from easy. I faced significant obstacles, including overcoming self-doubt, dealing with mental health issues, and breaking free from destructive patterns. I went through rehab and attended Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDa) to address my codependency and struggles with self-harm. Music became my therapy and my outlet for healing.

I overcame these challenges by confronting them head-on and using them as fuel for my art. I learned that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness, and that it’s okay to ask for help. These experiences taught me the importance of self-compassion and the power of authenticity.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way are many, but the most significant is that healing is possible and our struggles can become our strengths. I want the world to know that my brand is all about honesty, empowerment, and connection. Through my music, I aim to create a space where others feel seen and understood, encouraging people to embrace their true selves.

This fall, I’m excited to be performing pop-up shows alongside Nicky Licky, bringing our energy to new audiences and continuing to push boundaries in the music scene. My journey is ongoing, and I’m committed to using my platform to advocate for mental health awareness and support others on their own paths.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting LA for a week, here’s how I’d make sure they had the best time:

Day 1: Classic LA Start

Morning: We’d kick off with breakfast at Republique on Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood, where the pastries and coffee are unbeatable.
Afternoon: A drive up into the Hollywood Hills to check out the amazing homes and get inspired by the breathtaking views.
Evening: Wrap the night at Star Love, my go-to for lady queer nights. The vibe is always perfect, and the music keeps you moving.

Day 2: Beach & Boardwalk

Morning: A stroll through Santa Monica Pier, then bike down the boardwalk to Venice Beach.
Afternoon: Lunch at The Butcher’s Daughter on Abbot Kinney, followed by exploring the shops and street art.
Evening: We’ll catch the sunset with cocktails at The Bungalow in Santa Monica.

Day 3: Arts & Local Spots

Morning: A run or walk up Runyon Canyon, but we’ll use the local entrances for a more peaceful experience.
Afternoon: Lunch at The Farmers Market off 3rd and Fairfax, and explore the unique vendors.
Evening: Dinner at Hans BBQ in Burbank. The food is incredible, and it’s a hidden gem.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shoutout to Pep Williams, an incredible inspiration in my life and music career. Pep’s journey as a fine art and street photographer, former professional skateboarder, and his deep roots in the music industry have all had a significant impact on me. He’s not only worked with major labels like Death Row Records and Interscope but also photographed iconic artists like Chris Brown, Nick Cannon, and Suicidal Tendencies. His ability to capture raw, authentic moments, whether in the California prison system or the global music and art scene, is truly inspiring.

Pep’s fearlessness in breaking boundaries and telling stories through his lens parallels what I aim to do with my music. His career embodies the power of authenticity, something I strive for in my songs and performances. Watching how he transitions effortlessly between skate culture, fashion, art, and music has motivated me to stay true to my roots while exploring new creative spaces. Pep has always encouraged me to push boundaries, stay bold, and above all, be real. His influence has been invaluable in my growth as an artist, and I’m forever grateful for his support and inspiration.
