We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a mental health professional, I recognized a need for more children’s mental health books that are diverse in nature and fun to read. I’ve always enjoyed writing poems or short stories that rhyme since I was younger; so, after completing graduate school, I decided to use my interest in writing to create stories that introduce kids to mental health and healthy coping skills.
I believe a book can travel anywhere in the world and be more easily accessed to children than therapy. Therefore, it was easy for me to pursue the option of becoming a children’s book author in order to reach children far and wide and spread mental health awareness.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist, and I work mostly with children, military families, and veterans. I attended school for several years before obtaining my doctorate in school psychology. It was a long journey with challenges that I was not necessarily prepared for. One challenge that comes to mind was during my internship year when I learned I was pregnant with my son. He was a blessing yet a surprise for my husband and I (ha ha), and his due date was around the time that I would graduate school. Although that by itself made me nervous, living over 2,000 miles away from family (including my husband) and friends, as well as navigating internship and the experience of pregnancy on my own, made it scarier. I wasn’t sure of what to expect, but I was motivated to keep going no matter the circumstances. My son gifted me with a bigger reason to graduate and finish school with a bang. He inspired me four years ago, and he continues to do the same today.
This brings me to what I am excited to speak about next. Earlier this year, I took a leap of faith and launched my book project, called the Creative, Coping, Conscious Child Collection. C4 Collection is a series of books that is meant to inspire a child’s imagination and creativity, as well as their ability to cope and understand mental health issues. Through C4 Collection, I published my first book, titled 1, 2, 3 Self-Care is Important to Me in January of 2022. My second book, titled Melody, the Music Queen: A Story About Coping with Anxiety will release on August 30, 2022 . The books are enjoyable and educational for children of all ages, especially those between the ages of 6-12 years.
One lesson I learned in life is that you shouldn’t wait or be too scared to step out of your comfort zone to pursue your passion or what your heart desires. Becoming an author has always been a dream of mine, and I’m so thankful to finally write and share what I enjoy with the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m still getting to know some of the “hot spots” in the area. But if I had to create an itinerary to show a friend a good time, I would probably start the trip off at the beach in San Diego, CA. My family and I are military, so I would likely take them to one of the military (private) beaches where there is less of a crowd. On day two, I would treat my friend to lunch at the one of the waterfront restaurants in Coronado and bike riding around Coronado Island. On the third day, we would visit Balboa Park and then the San Diego Zoo. One of my favorite places to hike is Tory Pines, so I would definitely take them there on the fourth day. On the fifth day, we would visit Hollywood Blvd in LA and the restaurant, Kale My Name by Tabetha Brown. If it is basketball season, on day six, we would book tickets to see an LA Lakers game. On the last day, we would visit Rodeo drive and one of my favorite brunch restaurants, called The Farm of Beverly Hills.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve always been a girl with “big dreams,” and by the grace of God I’ve reached many of them. However, I can say with 100 percent certainty that my success is also due to my village of support. I want to dedicate my shout-out to my support team, to include my family and Insoul church family in Fayetteville, NC. There are people who genuinely prayed over my life and wished the best for me. I can’t thank them enough, and I’m so grateful for them!
