Meet Jeremaine Luber | Multi-disciplinary Artist; Dancer, Actress, Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremaine Luber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremaine, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up as an only child, I always felt like all of the attention was placed on me, which was both a blessing and a curse. I love my parents, and I am so grateful for them instilling great values within me. However, because I grew up in a traditional Filipino, Christian household, I was always so curious about what other things were happening around the world other than what I was being taught at the time. I wouldn’t say I felt trapped, but I longed to learn more and expand my environment. I remember being 18 and writing “Freedom” on a whiteboard in my room, not thinking anything of it at the time. Now being in my early thirties, having freedom and independence are both such a huge part of my core values. I feel like being an artist knows no bounds and you’re pretty much free to create whatever you want. With my other 9-5 job at the moment, I feel very restricted at times, but when I get to focus on my art I feel like a weight is lifted because there’s nobody else telling me what to do or a set measurement of how much work I have to get done. I find that I do my best work when I work on whatever I want without restraints from other people. I love having autonomy and trust in myself as an artist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I involve myself in a variety of work through art, dance and film; I do my best to continue my exploration by connecting to my audience with relatable and diverse life experiences, illustrating that every narrative is valuable and worth telling. I like to draw inspiration from my Filipino ancestry, movies, music, and nature, which I incorporate into my whole body of work. Right now, I really excited to start my research on my next short film. I’m still very much an amateur filmmaker, but I find that I see a lot of growth in myself whenever I dive into a new project and that to me is the most rewarding part of it all.
Getting to this point wasn’t easy at all. Like most artists, I struggle with imposter syndrome, so a lot of things are always going on in my mind… so much overthinking and self-doubt. Even from jumping to one medium to another was hard in itself. It really helped when I stopped putting myself in a box when it came to producing my art. I’m not just a dancer or graphic designer or filmmaker or actor. I am all of it and I just like to create.
As an artist, I am super passionate about utilizing my voice to encourage and motivate other Filipinos to cultivate their own stories in the art and entertainment industry. If I have a story worth sharing, then so does everyone else. We should all have the opportunity to share our experiences with one another in this lifetime.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I know this isn’t in LA, but I would take them to Joshua Tree National Park for a little R&R retreat. Let’s get lost in the desert and moonlight for a little bit. It’s such a great place to reset and get away from the noise of the city. I feel very inspired whenever I go there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m going to shoutout my all of my best friends from around the world! I’m so blessed to have made so many great friends in Vancouver, Toronto, LA, London and New York – you know who you are. I cherish all of my friends so dearly; they inspire and motivate me in so many ways. I’m honestly so blessed to have so many great friends even at long distances.
