We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up I always was fascinated by movies. I would sit for hours and hours mesmerized by the story and characters that were portrayed in front of me. My mom showed me these home video recordings and in almost every one I am asking to hold the camera. I think from these experiences nothing else really caught my eye or interested me. I come from a family background of restaurant ownership and siblings going into medical fields, but none of that really fit me. I needed a way to express myself and I’ve never been one to take a normal path in life. I found film and photography ignites every part of my soul and I constantly get the opportunity to inspire others visually. When I locked down on music videos as my main business I discovered myself in a way. I mean it when I say I think my art career saved my life and I can’t see myself doing anything else.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If you asked the general population where they would expect to see big budget film shoots the answer would be Los Angelos or some big city where all the money is. I am from Salt lake city, Utah which is known for skiing, not filming or success stories in artistic careers. To most that would make them move as far away from Utah and setup in Hollywood, but this excites me. I have taken this challenge and established myself as one of the best Film Directors in Salt Lake City. I have worked for six years and now artists fly to Utah to work with me. I have developed a multimedia company called Ripdaydream specializing in music videos, live events, exclusive content, and merchandise. I need it to be understood this is one of the hardest jobs and not a lot of people recognize that. I have had to accept failure over and over again, but it makes me come back stronger. We now film on average four music videos a month for amazing artists that in the beginning never seemed possible. The thing that sets us apart is how we make innovative and authentic videos. We break the normal visual code for music videos and dive into the artists music more than others would. We constantly challenge ourselves to be different. I am confident you will be seeing our videos worldwide in the next few years.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think anyone coming to Salt Lake City needs to experience our mountains up close. There is nothing like it in the world and I am not even exaggerating. The scenery will blow your mind and you will never want to leave. Some of my personal favorite places to eat are the Pie Pizzeria, Sappa, Moochies, Eggs in the City, Eva’s, and Wing coop. We are not very known for our night life, but we have plenty of bars and cafe’s to sit outside and soak up the sun. My favorite bar is Bodega, but make sure you enjoy tequila. I think to cap everything off a boating or camping trip is a must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think the biggest shoutout for me goes to my parents and my girlfriend. I struggled for a long time getting to where I am now in my career and my parents have been supportive through the whole process. I think for parents it’s scary to have your kid go into an art field because it’s so competitive. Through it all they have understood how much I love what I do and just want to see me happy. Now if any of you are in film it takes every piece of you and time to be in this business. I tend to forget to sleep, eat, and practice healthy routines. My girlfriend has been so supportive of helping me through all this and making sure I hydrate so I don’t pass out on set. I can get discouraged a lot with work and she’s always there to pick me up. There is no business without her and she’s my rock for life.
I am lucky to have started this business with one of my best friends Ethan Chandler. We have always been in sync about our vision and love for music. Lastly a shoutout to Ian Huber who has joined the team this year. He has taken a huge role and has stepped up to make our videos reach another level.
