We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Swan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My wife and I are serial entrepreneurs. We met in college and decided that making our own way was better than working for someone else. We started out selling at flea markets. eventually we both got training in the arts. She became a hairstylist and I studied tattooing. That led to us opening our own respective businesses. We have also opened up boutiques and started clothing lines. We currently own This or Die Salon, Broken Art Tattoo and Mi Corazon Mexican Cuisine. Honestly, the long hours never bothered me. I knew i was building something for my family and our future…until COVID came on kicked the shit out of us.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a fairly well rounded as a tattoo artist. My style leans toward new traditional. I like line work, smooth shading and saturated colors. If anything sets me apart it is that i always want to make certain my clients have a good time and a great tattoo. I know the guys that i have apprenticed at the shop offer the same customer service. We pride ourselves on customer relations and developing a good reputation with good tattoos!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well obviously that has all changed with COVID. Because I have a few business’ then my guest do love getting a tattoo then heading to my restaurant for tacos and tequila! And I love it too! however that is just a starting point. I used to love taking friends to that tiny tiki bar on Sunset. maybe over to Malibu to Geoffrey’s pr if they have kids we will hit the peer for some carnival rides. If they want to see some sights then I always recommend the Observatory and if the timing is right we will hit the Pasadena Flea Market.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Actually the only one that can take this credit is my wife Vanessa. She has always been a source of inspiration and a has a constant mind full of ideas. In fact she is the one that encouraged me to become a tattoo artist while she was going to cosmetology school. I am a pretty good self-starter but she cracks the whip! and thats how you get it done!
