We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Abran and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jess, why did you pursue a creative career?
This was never a choice, as cliche as that may sound. But I was born knowing that I was going to pursue a life in the entertainment industry. I grew up in a very small, blue-collar town. A place for the newly wed and the nearly dead, as some call it, haha!
And that just wasn’t the life I saw for myself. I was never good at school, I was always looking for an escape either though my epic fantasy books or, my music, just fully immersing myself in my teen angst, really.

I knew from a young age that I was going to leave my family farm and travel the world with my music and find a way to make people, laugh, cry, make people…. feel.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been called a multifaceted artist, a multidisciplinary artist, but I’m just an artist at heart. It’s the backbone of who I am and it may trickle into every little thing I choose to do with my life.

A voice from the Laurentians of rural Quebec, born to entertain. I’ve been in the entertainment business my entire life with strong roots in the music industry. I was scouted at an early age by producer to the stars Paul Northfield who had
produced rock legends such RUSH, Black Sabbath, Courtney Love and many more. This led to my eventual European tour which allowed me to play the infamous Berlin Melt Festival and expand my network into the then expansive EDM scene as a sought after vocalist. Being a songstress of the 90s you can
find my music reminiscent of the folk-alternative, Trip-Hop era. I’ve been told that I have a breathy, textured vocal – a unique song of the siren that will seduce you out to sea and send shivers up your spine.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m putting you in my pocket and taking you around Montreal with me:

Welcome to the Plateau (artist district of Montreal)

– Start the day off by getting a coffee at Chez Teta
– Go to brunch at P’tit Rustik
– Take a leisurely walk down Duluth street (which is closed off to vehicles and pedestrian only) and we’ll head to the famous Parc Lafontaine
– We would of course pick up a bottle of wine on our way back to my lush patio back home and indulge a little while we listen to some of my favorite jazz records.
– We will bike over to Antipode on Laurier street in the Mile End of Montreal for dinner.
– And catch the sunset at my favorite view point in Montreal.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the creative community around me. I’ve been really lucky to surround myself with really talented musicians or various folks from the entertainment industry to whom I look up to. It’s a really competitive industry and more likely than not, especially when we were young and just starting out, it was dog eat dog. Everyone out for themselves. It really felt like everyone was struggling to get to the top, as if there was some imaginary pyramid and there was only room for one at the table.

Years in the industry has taught me that there is room for everyone.
