We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Ford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Two components that have greatly contributed to the growth of my business are 1) Showing up authentically me and modeling my business after that. There are a thousand different businesses my clients could patron, but they choose to come to me because after the services are done, I wasn’t pretending to be your friend.
I will really text you after to check in on you! Personal stories and connection happens on that [massage] table and I want you to know I was listening. I heard you, I care, and you belong here. This is more than just skin care. 2) I realized a few years ago through taking personal development classes that it’s important to have people who “shark” for you and you “shark” for them, meaning forming and nurturing a group of like-minded people is crucial to success. We can’t do everything on our own and frankly, success is just so much sweeter when I can share it with the people I love and who are making moves beside me. When I win, we all win.
What should our readers know about your business?
Beauty by Kitty Kat came to life after years of manifesting and not even knowing it! Up until 3 years ago, I was a department manager at a major retailer for 7 years and I lived and breathed that company but I honestly hated my job. The corporate ladder is never-ending and I was always working to get another promotion to get to another level in the company. I felt like I had to jump through hoops and spill blood just to get a regional manager to notice me.
You would probably find me at that store 40 years from now still selling bras and panties if it hadn’t have been for lay off’s and corporate downsizing, which came at just the right time (and I say that now because hindsight is 20/20). I had been thinking about going to back to school to get an Esthetician’s license but I didn’t know how to work 60 hours a week and do that at the same time so the Universe heard me and was like “don’t worry, girl. I’ll just get rid of your job for you.” and then there I was, 31 years old and starting from scratch. Beauty by Kitty Kat is not just a Beauty business; it’s love, trust, struggle, knowledge, patience, and perseverance. It’s all those little things that make you feel at home.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Long Beach is my spot! I’ve been here for 9 years and this place never gets old! Some of my favorites: The Breakfast bar for brunch and drinks Bluff park for free yoga The Attic for bloody mary’s Aroma Di Roma for coffee Shades of Afrika for incense, books, and locally made items. Ding Tea for boba Rascals for Chinese chicken salad CocoRenos for tacos and margaritas Fern’s Garden for cool gifts Lazy Acres for fresh to-go foods and vitamins. Second Street for shopping
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, friend-family, and Benchmark Courses deserve all the praise! My mom is incredibly supportive as in she will shamelessly sell my services to anyone who will listen and because of that, I now have a steady clientele in Sacramento as well as in Costa Mesa. My friends are all entrepreneurs and like I previously mentioned, it’s important to foster relationships with like-minded people so many of our conversations are centered around “How can I support you?” and “Look at this new way I found to do this..”, sharing ideas, networking, and all around loving on each other- the family vibes are real! And Benchmark Courses because they provide a space and open a dialogue about intention and mindset that has helped me shift my perspective to create a life I wake up excited about every morning.
