We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Kindness, compassion, and patience. People don’t need a piercer who keeps their nose in the air and just wants to get the task done. People don’t need to be seen as a dollar sign. Getting pierced is scary, period. You need someone who understands that and understands what the body does when it’s scared so that you can better feel supported. If someone takes a second to breathe, that’s great! If someone just wants to go for it, that’s fine too! You just need to be kind about it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It wasn’t easy for me in the beginning — I hate hurting people. I’m very in touch with the emotions of those around me, so when clients feel fear, I feel for them. After almost every piercing I remember crying and wanting to quit, because I simply didn’t want to put people through pain. But then I realized what I was really doing — I was giving people a way to fully become themselves, to fully personalize their person. To be a part of a person’s journey in that manner is an honor and something I’ll take with me to the grave. I’ll never take it for granted, ever.

What I want the world to know about my story and my journey is that is what just that — a journey, and it still is. I still learn every day and grow every day as a piercer and person. I’ve met some monumentally astonishing artists along the way and I’m so, so thankful for this path I’ve taken.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh that’s a good one, I would probably start off by taking a thrift trip down Main Street in Ventura! All the thrift stores on that strip donate a portion of their profits to different charities and organizations and they have the most unique items! I’ve also gotten to be a part of some fantastic events like 88trade, Afterglow and the Hot Girl Market, so I’d probably make a trip to one (or all) of those events and support local creators in the meantime! A trip to the gentle barn to love on some rehabilitated animals would be rewarding and sweet as well. Honestly, there’s just so much, I’d probably beg them to stay for another week just to get it all done!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The biggest support and source of education for me was Elayne Angel’s “The Piercing Bible.” It’s not only informative, but incredibly thorough and riddled with a tone of encouragement. When I was seeking support when I first started out, I didn’t quite get any from those I sought it from, so this book was great for me!
