We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Enriquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I started this business I had to loose fear of taking risks and become comfortable doing so. After I got certified to do tooth gems I realized I was not equipped with enough supplies. I opened up a credit card and invested all my available balance on everything I needed from displays, disposables, to PPE. I would also spend most of my paychecks on Swarovski crystals and dental supplies.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Doing tooth gems is more than Swarovski crystals and 18K gold to me. As a their tooth fairy my job is to enhance their smile and make them feel like a celebrity.
I am glad to say I offer over 15 different Swarovski colors in 3 different sizes, over 20 different 18k gold pieces and select diamonds. During your service I use luxury care products for my clients to get more out of their experience, I make sure to use some of the best Orthodontic grade adhesive, lead-free crystals, and other U.S made items.
I am most excited for when I receive my cosmetology license. I plan on merging all my services and becoming 100% self employed.
I first started by giving away free tooth gems, and with time I transitioned into charging as low as $25. Once I became confident and had invested in good materials I adjusted my prices.
I offered house calls until I couldn’t anymore due to transportation issues. I one day woke up and decided I wanted to work inside a tattoo shop, so I showed up at Why Not Ink in the SFV and asked
if i could work there. I spoke to the owner the same day and began to slowly take appointments at the shop. In order to get more exposure I also started participating in flea market events
It was a challenge starting a business without knowing where to start. I wanted to do it the right way so I did some research and decided starting a DBA was the best fit for me and my business. The first year I filed my taxes I was super stressed searching for receipts. I quickly learned to seek professional advise from my tax accountant.
Los Angeles Tooth Fairy enhances healthy teeth with Swarovski crystals, diamonds, or 18k gold, creating designs on teeth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you ever decide to visit the San Fernando Valley there is some places you must visit. Valley Relics Museum located in Lake Balboa is filled with historical signs, movie props, statues and other artwork. One of my new favorite small businesses is The Midnight Hour Records in San Fernando, they carry a wide selection of vinyl records. I purchased my first Los Tigres del Norte album here. A few blocks down from the record store is Asumare Peruvian Cuisine a hole in the wall restaurant with delicious saltados de pollo y carne. After eating you can visit the Japanese Garden in Encino, visit the Griffith observatory or take a drive on Mulholland and enjoy the pretty views. You can also stop by one of many flea markets in LA, I like the ones hosted by Trade 88 in Mid-City or Silverlake Flea in Echo Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I get my hustle from my momma. She has always encouraged me to invest in business ideas, and take skills classes. She was a home and business owner in Mexico, I aspire to be like her and do everything she couldn’t. As a DACA recipient and 1st gen student I want to thank my HS college advisors for pushing me to pursue a trade at a community college and most importantly, Thank you for giving me the resources for me to succeed.
