We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Ruiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I am pursuing a creative career because I enjoy being able to express myself through make up looks. Growing up in a Hispanic house hold I was not able to I wear makeup until I turned 15 years old. I remember one of my aunts secretly buying me makeup when I was about 13, I would sleepover her house and practice for hours on putting on eyeliner. As soon as I turned 15 my cousin gifted me my first set of professional makeup brushes, and a couple of makeup products. That is when makeup became my passion, and my love for it was becoming stronger. I started practicing on myself, and on family. I started freelancing on my spare time at the age of 18 which open up a new satisfying feeling of being able to glam people for their events. I was very proud of making them feel more beautiful with a touch of makeup.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business requires me to glam individuals for any events they would like. Being a traveling makeup artist allows me to do people makeup from the comfort of their home or venue. I would say that I got here with the support of my Fiancé and family they always push me to do what I love. I would definitely say it’s not easy trying to build a business and working full-time there is a lot of sacrifice that goes in play. In addition, a lot of time management has a huge role in being able to book clients you need to make sure you don’t over book yourself.

I learned that you cannot rush your work and over book yourself it is best to build connections and do a great job rather than rush and do an passable job. What I would love people to know is that all limitations are self-imposed when you feel like giving up keep going it is worth it especially if you are passionate about whatever it is you are doing.

I am a strong believer on there is always room for improvement, so my business is definitely something that is always needing work, which I will gladly keep working on.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie was in town for a week I would definitely take her hiking to see the city view. My favorite place to hike is Cleghorn trail in San Bernardino. Then we would probably get some smoothies or coffee. I would love to take her to try Dutch Bros it has become one of my favorite coffee places. In addition, I would probably try to practice some makeup looks on her, and get some content for my social media. Lastly, we would have to go shopping at Sephora or even a TJMaxx trip.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I took a small break from my makeup career, and last year in 2022 I took a makeup course from Drea Makeup where I officially became a certified makeup artist. Honestly one of the best decisions I have done in Makeup Artist career. It really help me get out of that break I gave myself, learned many new techniques and motivated me to get myself out there again. My instructor Andrea was an amazing instructor she took the time to practice one on one with each student, made sure we had the right material all the time. I felt very motivated with her success stories that inspired me to want to keep going in this industry.
