We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Wade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, how do you think about risk?
I’m pretty risk averse when it comes to finances, but I enjoy a good risk-venture in other areas of my life where I believe I will make it out alive or improve my quality of living. Changing my career to pursue data science in my 30s was the best decision I’ve made. It’s never too late to learn something new or pursue a passion you never knew you had. There may be a few challenges that arise – taking a pay cut, difficulty finding a position due to “lack of experience”, etc. – but as long as you have the will to persevere and apply, you will see your goals met and dreams come to fruition.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me a part is I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that impacts the central nervous system. This includes my vision, mobility, comprehension, amongst other things that impact my day to day productivity. Deciding to go back to school to pursue a masters degree in Data Science was extremely difficult because I had to work extremely hard to even focus and retain the information. I was determined to press forward and graduate no matter how long it took. I begin my masters program at Loyola University Maryland in January 2020 while going through a divorce, relocating to another city, and working a full-time job. Not only did I graduate in May 2023, but I graduated with a 3.9, with honors. It was not easy, but it was worth it.
I got to where I am professionally, by the grace of God and his Holy Spirit that’s given me strength, both personally and professionally. I overcame challenges by continuing to stay healthy – working out at least 3x a week, remain grounded in my faith – going to church and spending time with family and friends when I had time, not taking offense easily, and continuing to serve others which gave me so much strength as well! I also humbled myself to ask for help, when necessary. I learned how to give grace and receive it as well.
I’ve learned many lessons, but one that’s highlighted the most is to be steadfast, having unshakable faith! God is present and he always concerned about you. Worrying is not an option when you have a God who provides his peace. The “peace” of the world is counterfeit. I found that the peace God gives is grounded in contentment.
I want the world to know that I serve an awesome God, and all that I have doesn’t belong to me. I strive to be a better person and improve my quality of life so I can improve others’ lives as well. I enjoy being an analyst and data scientist because I have an opportunity to impact real change in the the community. I want to improve the quality of others lives through foreseeing outcomes!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I live in the DC metro area, this is a hard one! So many gems here, locally. But, I’m pretty sure I’d have to take them to the roof top of MGM in Oxon Hill, MD. From this location, you can view Maryland, DC, and Virginia. The scenery is breathtaking.
You can’t come to DC without brunch and there are a few awesome spots, but we’ll check out Creole on 14th in DC. They play hip hop music and their brunch menu is top tier!
I’d love for us to also ride through the city (DC) on scooters and experience a night of PG county’s (Price George County, Maryland) finest GoGo band, New Impression. And, of course we’d have to support my dear friend, Councilman Maurice Hairston’s, events whether it’s a concert he’s having or a philanthropic event he’s put on for the city of Glenarden, MD. He’s the best rapper this area’s produced!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shoutout God who blessed me with my parents who have supported me every step of my life’s journey. From running me to track meets across the country at an early age on to seeing me compete as a collegiate athlete, to being present for every major moment of my life – ups and downs, to praying for me in every season. My parents are the most impactful part of my life and it’s because of them I am as successful as I am today.
