We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessie Chaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic/creative career because I felt like I had no other choice, it was my heart’s true calling.. There was nothing else I was more drawn to do, and found myself not being able to stop. All I wanted to do was take photographs, learn, expand, and absorb as much information about photography as I could, so I knew this was the path for me. Once I made that decision, doors continued to open and more opportunities evolved, proving to me that this was what I wanted to do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My photography is inspired by the overlooked details and unseen magic in the everyday. I am very drawn to abandoned spaces, places that would easily be overlooked by the common eye, and finding and seeking beauty in the most unlikely locations. I got to where I am today by getting up everyday and doing what I love most, taking photographs. After pursuing a Master’s Degree in Photojournalism in London, I felt confident in my tools and skills as an artist to pursue and support myself with a career in the arts. Of course there are challenges along the way, but I also see them as opportunities to learn, evolve, grow and expand further on my path. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are to always keep going, when one door closes another one always opens, to be open to anyone you meet as you never know what opportunities will arise, to seek beauty and light in everything, and follow your heart no matter what. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shoutout to Chris Davies with Fabrik Gallery, who gave me the amazing opportunity for my first show at his photography fair, Photo Independent in Los Angeles, followed by many more amazing exhibitions and art fair opportunities.
