Meet Jessie Garcia | Founder of ThatSoRare

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessie Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My love and passion for thrifting began at a young age when my parents and I would regularly visit flea markets, always on the hunt for great bargains. The excitement of finding unique items and the vibrant atmosphere created by diverse sellers left a lasting impression on me. Watching my parents buy and sell their own items at these markets deeply inspired me, to start my own business ThatSoRare. While currently selling online, my ultimate goal is to return to my roots by selling at flea markets and pop-ups, and eventually opening my own thrift store.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Sure thing! My work revolves around visiting thrift stores and carefully selecting clothing that I believe people will love—items that are trendy, vintage, or carry a touch of pop culture and memorabilia. Everything I offer is locally sourced and handpicked here in Los Angeles, California. To stay current, I research what’s popular and trending to ensure my shop stays fresh and appealing.
What sets me apart is that I do all of this alone, starting from scratch and always striving to do what’s best for my customers. I take pride in building a community of fashion enthusiasts who appreciate rare and unique finds. The name “ThatSoRare” reflects that excitement when you discover something truly special while thrifting—it’s a unique approach to the thrifting experience.
Running my own business has its challenges, whether it’s finding those standout pieces or navigating slow sales periods. But I’ve learned that patience is key; staying positive and persistent pays off in the end. I’m proud of the feedback I receive from customers who love their rare items—it inspires me to keep going and growing.
I invite everyone to visit my website, www.thatsorare.com, for great bargains and to get inspired by fashion trends. Whether you’re into fashion or dreaming of starting your own shop one day, I hope my journey encourages you to chase your passions too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting, I’d plan an unforgettable thrifting adventure in Palm Springs, California. We’d start the day exploring vintage and thrift stores in the area, hunting for unique finds and hidden gems. After our thrift haul, we’d head to Farm for a delightful brunch experience, soaking in the local vibe and enjoying delicious food. In the afternoon, we’d stroll through downtown Palm Springs, browsing for souvenirs and treating ourselves to some ice cream. To end off the day, we’d dine at Tac/Quila, my favorite restaurant known for its incredible ceviche and mouthwatering enchiladas. The relaxed atmosphere would be the perfect end to a day filled with exploring, good food, and great company. Palm Springs holds a special place in my heart, and I dream of opening my first thrift store there someday.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! I’d love to give a big shoutout to the incredible community of thrift sellers online. Their creativity, dedication, and passion have been a constant source of inspiration for me. From Depop, Ebay, TikTok, and Instagram accounts showcasing unique finds and collections, these sellers have shown me the true potential of thrifting. Their creativity and dedication have inspired me so much. Seeing their unique finds and how they care about sustainable fashion has motivated me to chase my dream with ThatSoRare. Thank you for creating such a supportive and inspiring community! And a huge shoutout to my friends and family who have been supporting me from the very beginning. Your encouragement and belief in me mean the world. Thank you for always being there!
