Meet Devin McGovern

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin McGovern and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For me I started my own brand and business out of necessity. After working for a decade in reality TV, the industry took a downturn. Working my way from PA to EP in a decade, I loved what I did, but the jobs were no longer there. So in my mid-40’s married with two kids, I had a decision to make. The TV jobs were no longer there and my TV resume was not translating to other industries. So I turned inward to the chaos of parenting and turned that into content. And so, Devin the Dad content creator, brand, and IP was born.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I moved to California with Hollywood dreams and I made my way through many different parts of the industry, including the illustrious restaurant table waiting job. But I was a PA, a producer, actor, stand-in I did stand-up comedy for many years and ultimately landed in reality TV. I most recently worked on shows like Bar Rescue for Paramount and the Emmy-winning show Chasing Flavor with Carla Hall. But as the reality industry began to decline, I switched my storytelling skills to the world of social media. And in the past year, Devin the Dad, has over 100 million views on Instagram. We had media write-ups from People.com and the Today show.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I live in the beautiful oceanside town of Laguna Beach, CA and of course if someone is coming we have to head to the beach for the day. One of my favorites is Heisler Park, bring a picnic and hang out for the day. For dinner love Royal Hawaiian and if you like yourself a good Mai Tai, they have the best in OC. During your morning stroll, you can hit up just about every corner with a great coffee shop and pastries. Rapport Coffee near The Montage Hotel is one of my favorites. Walking around downtown Laguna is a great place to take in the sights of this small coastal town.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a few people I would like to shout out because none of this exists without their support. Number one is my wife, Marlene, from her creativity that helps propel our brand forward, to editing or writing our content. She is the force behind the house and the kids so all this can happen.

Another one is an inspiration and someone I lean on for all things content related. Leo Chan, also known online as @levitatestyle is a fashion icon and a true professional in this industry.

Most recently I attended the MBA for Creators by Changer Studios and it truly has been a game changer for my business. From the inspiration to ideas and how to game plan my next steps. Without these people, my business would not be where it’s at today.
