We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesus “JFLOW” Flores and Angel “SGN” Romero NA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
SGN: I am currently an educator based in the San Fernando Valley. I serve as the English Language Development (ELD) coordinator at my school. What sets me apart from others is that English is my second language. I am an English Language Learner who became English proficient in the 7th grade and now supports students with improving their English proficiency. It’s quite fascinating and emotional to think about how things came full circle for me. At one point, I was the kid in ELD (English Language Development) classes, and now I’m the teacher supporting kids in ELD classes. Getting to this point in my career was not easy but I had a ton of help along the way. My mentors Dr. Marin and Bob Auerbach were particularly instrumental in helping me overcome challenges at various critical points in my journey. Some of the major lessons I learned along the way are that you must own your decisions and follow your own path. My journey has also taught me that it is greater to be attached to a mission than to money, power, or status. In the spirit of being a mission-driven individual, I would thus like to share that what I want the world to know about my brand and story is that I share my pain because healing from trauma can be one of the most transformational things you can do for yourself, family, and community.

JFLOW: I am an educator and what makes me most proud is seeing students from years ago still show me love for the impact I made in their lives. When you place impact over income, your blessings in life always multiply. I worked hard to get here, I sacrificed a lot to be here, and it has all paid off. One of my biggest challenges was getting into the field of education without a background in education and also being really young, but Dr. Marin gave me an opportunity to work hard and make my dreams come true. I’ve learned that life and humans are incredibly complex yet beautiful beings. Everyone has a light, it may dim and flicker at times, or it may even turn off at times, but in the end, all humans deserve an equal opportunity to pursue their dreams, happiness, meaning, love, prosperity, and fulfillment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
SGN: I would take my friend to try various taco spots. We would hit up a Dodgers game. I would also take them to Disneyland so that we could get on the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride which is an absolutely incredible experience. We would also go on a hike and buy some freshly cut fruta with lime, Tajin, and Chamoy after. Finally, we would go to the beach and just vibe.

JFLOW: Let’s go hit the beach and play some beach volleyball! Manhattan beach is super clean and it’s just a really positive place to be at. It all depends on the friend to be honest, so I would have to see who that friend is first. But in general, I think the beach is great, so are hikes, and there are great and amazing bars and clubs all over the city! Truth be told, the Anarchy Library is one of my favorite places to hang out at when I get a chance to go out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without the support and love of our family, mentors, and friends who have guided and gracefully educated us, we would not be where we are today both personally and professionally. There have been so many incredible folks who have built us up to be the educated foos we are today. In the spirit of gratitude, therefore, we would like to dedicate this shoutout to Victor Lee who is a friend, peer-mentor, a true inspiration and a brother from another mother to us. We met Victor in 2016 while on our first teaching assignment at the Jordan Education Complex in the community of Watts. What inspired us most about Victor is the way he embodies integrity, character, and selflessness in how he serves his students, colleagues, family, and friends. Although we are all around the same age, we view him as more than a friend, he is a peer-mentor and a truly phenomenal individual that deserves all the blessings this life has to offer. Grounded, kind, compassionate, generous, and fearless male role models are hard to come by nowadays, so huge shoutout to our brother Lee for being who he is.
