We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Mathers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, how does your business help the community?
Moku Manu Vintage impacts the community by being an outlet for sustainable garments and supporting other organizations that help people in need. Our team at Moku Manu Vintage curates, mends, and styles second hand garments to alleviate the pains of shopping for thrifted clothing. Our curating service temporarily keeps garments out of landfills, and restores value to second hand clothing. Along with this, the money that is spent at the thrift stores, like Goodwill, supports people in the community in need. So not only are these garments eco friendly to the earth, but provides relief and assistance to individuals in the community.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Moku Manu Vintage is a vintage online boutique that provides sustainable second-hand garments that were curated in the Hawaiian Islands. Our style and pieces are for women who are innovative, perceptive, and natural beauty. Ever since I was in high school, I had always had a passion for finding and styling unique second hand garments. In early 2020 I started selling my finds on Depop (@morgsmathers). I am currently attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and working towards getting my degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. Being a small business owner, I have learned that you are not only the owner, but you are the social media manager, curator, customer service, stylist, photographer, website designer, model, and all the positions you need to run your small business. Learning so many different skills for these tasks definitely put me outside of my comfort zone, but I love the hands-on learning experience that I know I can apply to other creative outlets.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friends come to visit, we mission hard! I would take my girlfriends out on the jet ski and we would go diving looking for wildlife, shooting photos, and spearfishing. I see us spending most of our time in the ocean exploring. I would also take them camping at my favorite sea side cliffs and make them hot-pot for dinner. When we are just hanging out on the farm with the chickens, we would harvest the oranges together and make fresh squeezed orange juice. Later we would venture into the local vintage and thrift shops and then probably grab Boba tea after.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to recognize my amazing boyfriend, Perrin James. He has been an inspiration to me of someone who has turned their passion into their career. As an underwater filmmaker and photographer, he has been an example that you can do anything you want to do in this life. I appreciate his endless support to all my creative endeavors, and always believing in me.
