Meet Jesus Maldonado | Browntears

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesus Maldonado and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesus, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had a few startup clothing brands in the past, but I’ll always lose the motivation to continue with them. Until I came up with Browntears, I knew if I was going to have a clothing brand I wanted my brand to stand for something. Starting this brand has taught me so much, in such a short amount of time.
1. Know what you stand for–and what you don’t.
Having a clear message of what your brand represents is key. There is going to be people who disagree with the message behind your brand. Stand your ground! Not everyone is going to support you and agree with your message.
2. If you want something, you have to go get it yourself.
Nobody is going to believe in you, unless you believe in yourself. It’s easy to get discouraged when something doesn’t go your way, but something I always remembered when giving up was the reason why I started this brand in the first place.
3. Stay motivated, stay inspired.
It’s very important to always stay motivated no matter what. Having courage is key, you may have to deal with setbacks but that should only inspire you to bounce back harder. Never stop learning, because it gives you courage. The more knowledgeable you are, the more comfortable you feel.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My main priority is to make clothing for the people and movements that inspire me. Every single piece of garment comes from love. Each design has a story and meaning of its own. The name Browntears is so simple yet so powerful. My main inspiration for this brand was my parent’s struggle in life due to being Immigrants and Brown. I remember seeing their frustration in their eyes of not having the same opportunities others have in America. Seeing that really impacted me at a young age to strive for greatness. My purpose and goal with this brand is to bring awareness of the struggles Immigrants and colored people face in America. I want to bring culture richness, appreciation and acceptance. Creating this brand, I knew from the name that my pieces were going to start a conversation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Special thanks to everyone who has supported the brand.
