We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Judy Ho and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Judy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking and facing mistakes, blunders, and failures are a necessary part on the route to success and achieving your goals. It is so important to reframe failures as opportunities for learning and to accept that they are going to happen, so that you don’t become trapped in a cycle of avoidance because you want to play it safe, or because you’re afraid of what others might think (or what you might tell yourself) if you falter. In my life, I’ve always made it a point to push forward even when I’ve felt scared of the unknown or had moments of self-doubt. This has really helped me to build resilience and usually if you try your best, you will make progress or learn something really important about yourself even if you don’t achieve your goals at the pace or magnitude that you might have wanted. Also, I can truly say that my biggest growth points in my life have been at times when I’ve faltered, made major mistakes, or experienced what felt like failures at the time. Looking back, these mistakes are really what has made me who I am, not necessarily all of my achievements and successes.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a licensed and triple-board certified Clinical and Forensic Neuropsychologist, a tenured Associate Professor at Pepperdine University, television and podcast host, and published author. I conduct neuropsychological assessments and serves as an expert witness in her private practice, hosts an active research lab, provides expert commentary to media, and am a frequently invited public speaker. What sets me apart is my dedication to scientific rigor in my work while understanding the importance of distilling important research findings in digestible and palatable ways to the public in order to empower people to take charge of their mental and physical health and to improve their well-being and resilience. It is truly my passion to educate others and arm them with the knowledge needed to effect positive change in their lives, and I love watch others succeed and improve when previously they had lost hope that they could change for the better. It’s inspiring to me to see others’ transformation and I try to walk the walk myself as well, and serve as a good role model for others and help them to understand that even when things are difficult, there are still so many things we can do to help ourselves and to experience meaning, fulfillment, and better quality of life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is amazing and I would love to show my best friend a bit of everything amazing about this city. I love nature and I would take them through some of my favorite hikes such as Temescal Canyon, Paseo Miramar, and the Hollwood Sign. We’d hit up some of the best museums in the area, including LACMA, Huntington Library, and the Getty. We’d check out what’s playing at the Pantages and perhaps hit up some other local theaters. We’d go to the Hollywood Bowl to check out an amazing band or musical revue. We’d also go to my two favorite theme parks, Disneyland and Universal Studios. We’d check out a sports game at the Rams/Chargers stadium, hit up a Dodgers game, or check out the LA Kings or the Lakers at Staples. And we’d definitely go on an amazing food tour because there are so many awesome restaurants here!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve had so many great role models in my life and cheerleaders along the way, and I want to shoutout my family (parents, sister, husband, and in-laws) for always believing in me and also providing important reality checks along the way and always being willing to be honest and forthright with me.
