We had the good fortune of connecting with Jhoan Tobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jhoan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When starting Undefined Models my thought process was not just about starting a business; it was about creating a movement that promotes self-expression and authenticity. The traditional model agency often propagated exclusive ideals of beauty, categorizing talent by race, age, and size. I wanted to disrupt this status quo and inspire others to embrace their own individuality and redefine beauty on their own terms. I recognized the importance of creating a platform that celebrates androgynous, gender-fluid, and non-binary models, showcasing their images across various facets of the industry, free from societal constraints. This agency was born out of a passion for positive change and a commitment to making a difference in the world of modeling by offering something different – a space where talent doesn’t need to be defined; it just is beautiful.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Undefined Models is not just a modeling agency; it’s a movement. What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the modeling industry. We are proud of our role in challenging societal norms, including traditional beauty and body standards. We celebrate and represent LGBTQ-friendly, non-binary, and gender fluid talent. Our excitement comes from disrupting the industry to make it more inclusive and being a leading agency in this movement.
Our journey wasn’t easy, but our passion and determination propelled us forward. We began in New York and expanded to other U.S. cities, such as LA, Miami, Chicago and plan to expand into four other cities in the next three years. Overcoming challenges required persistence, building strong industry relationships, and assembling a dedicated team. We remained true to our core purpose of promoting inclusion and empowering gender fluid talent.
One few key lessons I’ve learned is not to wait for someone else to initiate the change you wish to see. You have the power to be the catalyst, to stand for what is right. While it requires time and unwavering commitment, you will undoubtedly encounter numerous factors attempting to divert you from your core values. The strength lies in staying true to our mission and principles, even in the face of resistance. Don’t hesitate to seek support from others, building a network where you can both rely on and be relied upon is a powerful approach.
We want the world to know that Undefined Models is at the forefront of reshaping the modeling industry. We challenge norms, break molds, and provide a stage for models to shine regardless of traditional expectations. Our story is one of progress and a relentless commitment to making the modeling industry more inclusive. We champion diversity, protect models, and support healthy lifestyles. Our brand is innovative, cultured, bold, and progressive, but, most importantly, it’s a beacon of inclusivity and authenticity.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our story would not be possible without our talented and diverse models, each a unique embodiment of our ideals, have been the heart and soul of our agency. Their courage to break molds and inspire change is what fuels our mission every day.
I’d also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible team at Undefined Models. Norka Vasquez, our Head Booker and Business Partner, Vanessa Gil, our CMO, Salma Mostafa, our dedicated lead model liaison, and our exceptional support team – all of whom have played pivotal roles in driving our vision forward.
Lastly, to our clients who have supported our vision, embracing diversity and redefining beauty standards alongside us. Their trust in Undefined Models and their enthusiasm for the positive change we represent have been instrumental in our journey.
