We had the good fortune of connecting with JJAN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JJAN, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Good food See my children grow, thrive Conversation with good friends/ family Watching TV with my husband Complete art that I am satisfied with Meeting enthusiastic and respectful students See my students improve in artistic skill Being in nature
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I draw, paint, and make puppets. Currently, I am working on incorporating Augmented Reality Technology to my art. It is always fun and exciting to explore and learn new techniques such as new software or coding but at the same time, it can be quite intimidating. I’m trying to learn new things as I create art and that can sometimes make me get stuck in technical things. When I’m stuck, I try to study step by step and slow down the whole creative process.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If my best friend visits LA for a week, Day 1: Pick her up from the airport. Talk and drink beer all night at my place. Day 2: Griffith observatory, short hiking in the park, and visit trail cafe on the way back. On the way home, go to Porto’s and buy Mango cake and Cheese rolls. Eat the cheese rolls in the bakery for extra crispy and freshness. If you bring this home and eat, the texture changes. Day 3: Go to Pasadena. Visit Norton Simon Museum and drink coffee at the museum cafe in front of the pond. Have dinner at Daisy Mint for Thai food. Go to Zankou Chicken and get some food to go for a late-night snack at home. Day 4: Go to DTLA and visit The Last Bookstore (and galleries upstairs), Hive Gallery, Grand Park, and The Broad Museum. Go to Tierra Mia and drink Horchata Frappe (easy on sugar). Visit Soom Soom for fresh Mediterranean food. Don’t forget to order CHICKEN! Visit The Edison for some drinks. Day 5: She should be craving Korean food by now. Go to Baekjong in Roland Height if she wants meat, or visit Mansun in Diamond bar if she wants Sashimi. Go to Basilur Tea and Coffe in Buena Park and order TWO Souffle Pancakes (one for each person!). Go to Cheestela which is in the same The Source Mall and buy Creamtella which is an extra soft cheesecake that literally melts in your mouth. Day 6: Go to any outlet for shopping. Take her to Trader Joe’s to buy Himalayan salt for a souvenir. Also, buy Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies for a snack while packing her baggage. Day 7: Drop her off at the airport.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I thank my husband, who is also an artist, for giving me time to work on my art! Both of us are practicing artists, educators, and parents with two wild boys. My husband and I are a very good team that lets each other have time to do art! I would not be able to work on creative things without his support.
